DURHAM – The Duke women's golf team received its 29th consecutive bid to participate in NCAA Regional action on Wednesday as the Blue Devils were seeded No. 4 in the Franklin Regional and will travel to Franklin, Tenn., to play for an invitation to the NCAA Championship. The regional is slated for May 9-11 and will be played at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.
Other teams competing in the regional are Wake Forest, Alabama, Texas A&M, Duke, Oregon State, Vanderbilt, BYU, Kent State, UTSA, Augusta, Boston University and Austin Peay.
The regional will be a three-day, 54-hole tournament with 18 holes played each day. Duke will open action on Monday, May 9.
From regional competition, the top four teams and top two individuals (on teams not advancing) will advance to the national championship to be played May 20-25 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Duke has collected 10 NCAA Regional Team Championships over the last 26 years – 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2013, 2015 and 2018. The 10 regional titles rank second nationally behind Southern California (13).
Duke will enter regional action coming off a solid showing at the ACC Championship in Pawley's Island, S.C. The Blue Devils turned in a third-place ledger in stroke play, before falling to second-seeded Florida State in match play, 3-0-2. Duke was led by
Phoebe Brinker and
Erica Shepherd, who placed first and second, respectively, in the stroke play portion.
Brinker, who is from Wilmington, Del., became the 16th Blue Devil to win an ACC Individual title as she carded rounds of 70, 65 and 71 for a 10-under, 206. The 7-under, 65, in the second round tied an ACC Championship record. A native of Greenwood, Ind., Shepherd signed for rounds of 75, 68 and 69 for a 4-under, 212. She was the only golfer in the field to post two rounds in the 60s and notched her third top-five finish of the season.
Along with Brinker and Shepherd, the Blue Devils will field a lineup of junior
Megan Furtney, sophomore
Anne Chen and freshman
Rylie Heflin. Duke features three different golfers who have won an individual event over their careers – Brinker, Chen and Shepherd. Over the last two tournaments the Blue Devils have played in, a Duke golfer has won the individual title (Chen – Chattanooga Classic, Brinker – ACC Championship).
Duke head coach
Dan Brooks has guided the Blue Devils to an NCAA Division I record 140 career wins and 21 of Duke's 22 ACC titles. In his 38 seasons at Duke, Brooks has led the Blue Devils to seven NCAA Championships (1999, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2014 and 2019) and has taken his squad to the NCAA Regionals every year since 1993.
This year's women's golf championships will be broadcast for the seventh consecutive year by Golf Channel with more than 100 news and tournament hours planned again for the men's and women's golf championships.
