PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – The Duke men's golf team fired the fourth team lowest round of the day and wrapped up the 2022 ACC Championship with a tied for ninth place finish Saturday at the Watersound Club in Panama City Beach, Fla.
Duke was led wire to wire by senior
Quinn Riley, who posted three consecutive rounds under par and finished in a tie for 16th place.
The Blue Devils were 6-under 282 as team in Saturday's final round and climbed into a tie for ninth at 1-over 865 after entering the day in 12th place. North Carolina, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest finished in the top four and advanced to Sunday's match play semifinals.
Riley finished off his best career ACC Championship showing at 4-under 212, which was good for a tie for 16th. He opened with a 2-under 70 on Friday and followed that with consecutive rounds of 1-under 71. The senior from Raleigh was one of three Blue Devils to card sub-par rounds on Saturday.
Sophomore
Ian Siebers fired a 4-under 68, allowing the Bellevue, Wash., native to climb 19 spots on the leaderboard to tie for 28th at 1-under 215. The sophomore was 2-under combined on the Shark's Tooth Course's par-3 holes, which tied for the best score for the championship. He played a near-flawless final 18 holes with five birdies and just one bogey, which come on the 18th hole (his ninth of the day).
Jimmy Zheng's 3-under 69 on Saturday allowed the sophomore from New Zealand to finished tied for 35th at 2-over 218. Zheng caught fire near the end of his round with an eagle on the par-5 6th (his 15th hole of the day), followed by consecutive birdies on the 7th and 8th holes – both par-4s -- to shoot a 4-under 32 on his final nine-hole stretch.
Freshman
Kelly Chinn wrapped up his championship in a tie for 45th place at 5-over 221, which included a 2-over 74 on Saturday. Classmate
Luke Sample was 55th at 12-over 228.
The NCAA Men's Golf Regionals run May 15-18 and the Blue Devils will await the NCAA Selection Show to learn of their postseason fate.
