DURHAM – No. 22 Duke is scheduled to battle No. 62 Clemson on Thursday in the second round of the ACC Men's Tennis Championship.

Thursday's contest will kick off at 10 a.m. at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga. The Blue Devils (16-7, 8-4 ACC) are slated as the No. 5 seed heading into the tournament, while Clemson (12-13, 2-10 ACC) comes in as the No. 12 seed.

The winner of Thursday's match will advance to face the No. 4 seed and 23-ranked Louisville (18-7, 9-3 ACC) in the quarterfinal round on Friday at 10 a.m.

INSIDE LOOK
The Blue Devils finished the regular season with a 16-7 overall mark and an 8-4 record in ACC play. For that effort, the Blue Devils are currently ranked No. 22 nationally according to the latest ITA poll.

Garrett Johns has been impressive during his junior campaign and continues to find himself listed in the ITA rankings. Heading into the ACC Championship, Johns is the No. 55 ranked singles player after posting an 11-6 mark in dual action. He holds a 7-3 record against national ranked opponents as well. Four other Blue Devils join Johns with at least 10 singles wins on the year –Â

ACC CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
Duke is seeking its 13th ACC Championship in program history and first since 2006 when they won in dramatic fashion. After losÂing the doubles point and two singles matches against No. 9 Virginia, the Blue Devils trailed, 3-0. However, they stormed back to win three straight singles matches andÂ
Stephen Amritraj clinched the title with a three-set win at the No. 6 position. The Blue Devils defeated Virginia Tech, 4-1, and Florida State, 4-2, to advance to the finals.Â
Jonathan Stokke was named ACC Tournament MVP that season.

The Blue Devils first title came in 1982. Duke has also won the crown in four consecutive years from 1993-96 and again from 1998-2001.

HISTORY WITH CLEMSON
Duke leads the all-time series with Clemson, 47-30, and is currently riding a six-match winning streak over the Tigers. The last Clemson victory came back on April 15, 2016, when it defeated the Blue Devils, 4-3. Over the last 15 matches, Duke holds the 14-1 edge.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Clemson, who is No. 62 in the latest ITA poll, sits with an overall record of 12-13 after besting Boston College on Wednesday, 4-0, in the ACC Championship first round. The sophomore doubles pair of Ryuhei Azuma and Spencer Whitaker led the team with a 8-4 dual doubles mark. Azuma occasionally teams up with senior Teodor Giusca in doubles play as well and the pair have posted a 7-3 record on the year. In singles play, Giusca holds a team-high 13 dual wins, while Azuma, Jorge Plans Gonzalez and Maxwell Smith follow closely with 12, 11 and 10 wins, respectively.

DUKE AND CLEMSON PART TWO
Duke and Clemson faced off during the regular season with the Blue Devils recording a 4-0 victory at Ambler Tennis Stadium on April 3, 2022.

The Blue Devils made quick work of the Tigers in doubles play to take the early 1-0 edge. Johns and Sculley registered the first win of the day after their 6-1 victory over Azuma and Whitaker on the top court. Dale and Zhang followed that up on court three, besting Matt Pitts and Trey Stinchcomb, 6-2, to clinch the doubles point. The match betweenÂ
Khan and Vallabhaneni against Giusca and Smith went unfinished with the visitors leading 5-3.

Duke continued that momentum in singles play grinding out three-straight victories to secure the overall win. Vallabhaneni defeated Pitts on court four to hand the Blue Devils a 2-0 edge. Dale was the next to finish on court five after he claimed a 6-3 victory in the first set and a 6-1 win in the second over Stinchcomb. Senior Güell then clinched the match for Duke after he bested Whitaker 6-2, 7-5 on court three.

There were three matches that went unfinished. Johns dropped his first set to Azuma 6-3 on court one but was knotted at 5-5 in the second when the match was halted. Zhang recorded a 7-5 victory in his opening set with Giusca but was trailing 3-1 in the second on court two. Graduate student
Arturo Kam fell in his first set to Smith 6-4 on court six but was tied in the second 6-6 when the overall match was claimed.

Championship ticket passes are $25. One-day entry passes are $10 for adults and $7 for children (age 9-17) and non-ACC college students. Children (8 and under) and ACC college students (with valid ID) are admitted free of charge.
