OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Duke softball graduate student
Jameson Kavel has been selected as a top-25 finalist for the 2022 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, as the organization announced on Wednesday.
Kavel joins
Deja Davis as the only players in program history to be named to the exclusive list, with Davis being named to the 2021 list.
The Duluth, Ga., native is off to the best start of her career, hitting .436 with 15 home runs, 42 RBI and 14 doubles, while stealing six bases. Kavel has already set the Duke single season home runs and runs scored record, while closing in on the doubles and RBI records.
Kavel has been one of the most potent hitters in the nation, ranking sixth in total bases (112), seventh in slugging percentage (0.957) and 14th in home runs. She has helped the Blue Devils lead the ACC in batting average (0.345), slugging percentage (0.658), home runs per game (1.95), on-base percentage (0.436) and scoring (7.85), with the latter ranking No. 2 in the nation.
In addition, Kavel was named the ACC Player of the Week on March 9 and is coming off a three-home run performance in a win over James Madison on April 12, which set the single-game program record.
The top-10 finalists will be announced on May 4, before the list narrows to the final three on May 18. The 2022 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award winner will be announced prior to NCAA Women's College World Series.
Kavel and the Blue Devils are set for four games in the next five days, traveling for a midweek contest at Liberty on Wednesday, before flying to Syracuse for a three-game set from Friday-Sunday.
