PAWLEY'S ISLAND, S.C. – Duke women's golf sophomore Phoebe Brinker became the 15th Blue Devil in school history to win an ACC Championship as she carded an impressive 54-hole ledger of 10-under-par, 206, over the past two days at the 6,212-yard, Par-72 The Reserve Golf Club in Pawley's Island, S.C.
Brinker equaled former Duke standout Gina Kim's 10-under-par, 206, from a year ago for the Blue Devils' lowest 54-hole score in ACC action. The win for Brinker was her first collegiate victory and it marks the 16th time a Blue Devil has won the ACC individual crown over the past 23 championships.
"I hit it pretty far, so the par fives are reachable, which always helps, but overall, I just hit a lot of fairways, a lot of greens and I had my game this week," said Brinker.
A native of Wilmington, Del., Brinker notched rounds of 70, 65 and 71 for a 10-under, 206, finishing six strokes ahead of Duke teammate Erica Shepherd, who turned in rounds of 75, 68 and 69 for a 4-under, 212. Brinker and Shepherd were two of only three golfers on the day to shoot under par.
2022 marks the fifth time in school history Blue Devil teammates have placed in sole possession of first and second place in the ACC Championship. Brinker also became the sixth Duke golfer to win their first collegiate event at the ACC Championship and the first since Maria Garcia-Estrada in 2000.
"I am still cold and still shivering, but it was a great moment with my team and I am just really thankful for the group of girls I get to practice with every day, travel with and spend time with," said Brinker after her teammates doused her with water.
As a team, Duke placed third overall in stroke play and advanced to face second-seeded Florida State in Saturday's semifinals of match play. It will mark a rematch from the 2021 ACC Championship as the Blue Devils defeated the semifinals, 5-0, in to win the title. Wake Forest earned the No. 1 seed with a 54-hole score of 864 and will face fourth-seeded Virginia (880).
"I cannot wait," said Brinker about advancing to match play. "The team has some experience in match play so I just cannot wait to play a different style with my team."
Over the three rounds, the Blue Devils turned in scores of 295, 280 and 298 to finish with a 9-over, 873, which was the lowest 54-hole score of the spring for Duke.
Coming off her spectacular 7-under, 65, in the second round, Brinker had a solid start on Friday with four pars, before hitting her 8-iron from 145 yards to four feet for birdie. She added four more pars, including key up-and-downs on No. 7 and No. 9 to make the turn at 1-under, 35. Brinker drained an 8-footer for birdie on No. 10 and then got into trouble off the tee on the 385-yard, par-4 15th and finished with a double-bogey. She responded on the next hole by hitting her 60-degree wedge from 66 yards to five feet for birdie. Brinker closed the day by sinking a seven-foot par putt on No. 18 to close the day with a 1-under, 71.
"It's a great win for Phoebe," said Duke head coach Dan Brooks. "It's been fun to watch her not only realize her talents but also handle the limelight. She has shown tremendous poise this week."
A product of Greenwood, Ind., Shepherd collected back-to-back rounds in the 60s for the first time in her collegiate career to close stroke play with a second-place ledger. The second-place finish tied a season best and marked her third top-5 finish of the year.
Shepherd opened her day by draining a 12-footer for birdie and then parred the next five holes. After missing the fairway on No. 7, she suffered a bogey, but came back to birdie the next two on her way to making the turn with a 2-under, 34. Shepherd reached 3-under for the day as she hit her 60-degree wedge from 80 yards for birdie on No. 11. She would go on to miss three straight greens over the next three holes, but got up-and-down for par on No. 12 and No. 14. Shepherd hit her final four greens in regulation, while also draining a 12-footer for birdie on No. 17 to finish with her sixth career round in the 60s.
"Erica played very solid the last two rounds to gain second place," said Brooks. "She plays her best when it matters. I am proud of how she has handled the gusty winds. I'm real happy for Phoebe and Erica, finishing one and two."
Sophomore Anne Chen turned in a tied for 24th finish with rounds of 75, 72 and 77 for a 224. In the final round, she was even par over 16 holes, but had a double-bogey on No. 1 and triple-bogey on No. 10 to push her score higher. Chen, who is from Sugar Land, Texas, rolled in a 12-foot birdie on No. 8 for her lone score in the red, while scrambling on the back with five up-and-downs for par. She hit only eight greens in the final round and rolled 28 putts.
After both Megan Furtney and Rylie Heflin turned in key rounds of 75 the day before to help the Blue Devils into third place, the duo turned in scores of 81 and 84, respectively. Both were competing in their first ACC Championship of their careers.
Duke and Florida State will open action at 8 a.m., on Saturday, April 16 in the semifinals. The time has been moved earlier as inclement weather is expected to arrive at some point on Saturday. Wake Forest and Virginia will open their match at 8:50 a.m.
