Brinker in Top-10 at ANWA After Day One

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Seeing her first action in the Augusta National Women's Amateur (ANWA), Duke sophomore Phoebe Brinker shined on Wednesday in the first round as she carded a 1-over-par, 73, and is tied for ninth overall at the Champions Retreat Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
Fellow Blue Devil Erica Shepherd, who is looking to make her third straight cut in the event, turned in a 79 in round one and is tied for 59th overall. Following Thursday's second round, the top 30 golfers will advance to the final round at Augusta National Golf Club on Saturday, April 2. All 72 golfers will participate in a practice round at Augusta National Golf Club on Friday, April 1.
"Yes, it was a great round," said Brinker. "I had some ups and downs out there, but I had a lot of birdies. It was a really exciting round. I had a ton of confidence out there on the front nine, especially. I was hitting everything inside of 15 feet and was rolling along. When it got windy, it got a little harder out there, but I just stuck to my game and kept my confidence."
A product of Wilmington, Del., Brinker started strong on Wednesday as she parred the first hole and then rolled in a 10-foot birdie on No. 2. She hit the green in two on the par-5 third hole and 2-putted for birdie to get to 2-under and a share of the individual lead. After a 3-putt bogey on the fourth hole, Brinker parred the next three holes.
Brinker then hit her 9-iron from 145 yards and used the slope of the green to settle at three feet on No. 8. She sank the short birdie and then two-putted for birdie on No. 9. With the back-to-back birdies, Brinker made the turn at 3-under-par and led the field. She suffered three straight bogeys on the back nine, before draining a 5-foot birdie on No. 13 to get back to 1-under. Brinker had a terrific shot on the par-4 15th as her drive missed the fairway and settled in the pine straw. With 100 yards to the green on a downhill lie, she used a 50-degree wedge and hit a tremendous shot onto the green and parred the hole. Brinker added a sand save for par on No. 16 as well, before closing with a bogey on No. 18.
She hit nine fairways, 14 greens and had 32 putts on day.
Leading the field are Benedetta Moresco and Anna Davis with a 2-under-par, 70. Only five of the 72 golfers shot under par on day one.
Shepherd opened her day on No. 10 and was 2-over through nine holes. She collected her first birdie of the day on No. 16 as she rolled in a 68-foot putt from on the fringe. A product of Greenwood, Ind., Shepherd struggled on the back nine as she was 6-over through eight holes but closed with a birdie on her 18th hole as she drained a 6-foot putt to finish with a 79. She hit seven fairways, nine greens and had 32 putts on the day.
Provided she remain an amateur, the 2022 Augusta National Women's Amateur Champion will receive an invitation to the next five Augusta National Women's Amateurs, the 2022 U.S. Women's Open, the 2022 Women's British Open, and any USGA, R&A and PGA of America amateur championships for which she is eligible for one year.
NBC Sports will produce and broadcast three hours of live final-round coverage at Augusta National from Noon – 3 p.m. EDT on April 2, 2022. NBC Sports will also provide pre-event promotion across NBCUniversal's portfolio, while Golf Channel will deliver highlights, live reports and news coverage throughout the event, including onsite during the first two competitive rounds at Champions Retreat. Additionally, Golf Channel's "Live From the Masters" will commence on Friday, April 1 from Augusta National and wrap ANWA coverage on Saturday, April 2 and the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals on Sunday, April 3.
In Thursday's second round, Brinker will open play at 8:42 a.m., off hole No. 10, while Shepherd will tee off at 9:30 a.m., off hole No. 1.
