DURHAM – The Student-Athlete Development team kicked off 2022 with discussions surrounding important topics as part of the First-Year Student-Athlete Leadership program, "ACTION." The ACTION program focuses on helping first-year student-athletes transition into Duke and connecting them with various campus, community and dept resources to assist with their career at Duke.
Mental health, as well as Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging (D.E.I.B) and Social Justice issues are not only a concern to student-athletes, but also a focal point for staff and supporting and serving the student-athletes.
The first meeting of the spring semester, staff members of the Behavioral and Mental Health Department came and engaged students on the importance of mental health, and its effect on performance and well-being. In addition, consideration of how differences in values and thinking may impact communication and relationships was highlighted and discussed. Services, programs and how to access and utilize each were shared.
In February, as part of the Athletic Department's partnership with The Institute for Sport and Social Justice (ISSJ) this year, ACTION hosted two facilitators from ISSJ for a 90-minute interactive presentation. Throughout this DEIB educational training, the concepts of leadership, allyship, privilege, and bias across gender, sexual identity, race, culture, abilities (to name a few), across DEIB were highlighted and outlined.
Discussions ranging from personal experiences and growth to various strategies of what being a bystander in these spaces may entail unfolded during the program. Finally, campus resources such as The Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity; The Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture, The Freeman Center for Jewish Life, and The International House were shared, as well as campus and department student groups and places for connection.
