DURHAM – Before the 2022 conference slate kicks off this weekend at No. 3 Syracuse, let's look back at our successful 6-0 start and a few storylines.
BEST START SINCE …
With the dub over East Carolina on Monday, head coach
Kerstin Kimel's squad improves to 6-0 this spring, its best start since 2015 when Duke finished the season 16-5 (5-2 ACC) and went to the NCAA semifinals. Duke is averaging 21.83 goals per game to rank first nationally.
FAST AND FURIOUS
Through six games, Duke has tallied a whopping 131 goals and 64 assists for 195 points. The Blue Devils have proven to score fast and furiously and have received scoring contributions from 21 different players. Duke is also sharing the ball well with
Catriona Barry and
Eva Greco leading the way with 11 dimes apiece.
THAT BARRY/DESO CONNECTION
Graduate student Barry and sophomore
Katie DeSimone have combined for an outstanding 74 points in six games. No other duo in Division I has accomplished that this season. They have also notched more points than nearly 80 division I programs.
Barry owns 30 goals and 11 assists for 41 points while DeSimone has 25 goals and eight assists for 33 points. Last season, Barry tallied 35 points to DeSimone's 37.
HEY, I KNOW YOU
Duke secured a 19-9 victory over East Carolina on Monday, but that contest was more than just a win or loss. It was a family reunion in more ways than one. Head coach
Kerstin Kimel's daughter, Caroline, is a junior on East Carolina's team. The two squads have met every year since Caroline's freshman year in 2020. This season, she leads the team as an attacker with 22 points (10G, 12A) and owns six ground balls and three caused turnovers. East Carolina head coach Amanda Moore previously spent five years as an assistant coach under Kimel at Duke. Moore was named the first head coach in program history on June 27, 2016.
THE DRAW CONTROL QUEEN
Senior
Maddie Jenner has been spectacular this spring with 87 draws in six games. In Duke's win at High Point, Jenner grabbed a career-high 21, surpassing her previous of 19. That is the most in a single game in Duke history, besting her sister Olivia's 20 in 2019. She also owns 12 points (11G, 1A) this season.
Over the course of her career, she has amassed 458 total draws and is the nation's NCAA active career leader in draw controls per game (8.98). She needs 55 draw controls to become Duke's all-time draw control leader, which is currently owned by her sister, Olivia.
BUSY MARCH
Duke is set for a busy month with seven games in March and will face three ranked opponents. First on the docket is No. 3 Syracuse this weekend before Pittsburgh (March 10), No. 24 Penn (March 13), Louisville (March 17), Davidson (March 20), No. 16 Notre Dame (March 26) and Liberty (March 29).
LOOKING AHEAD
Duke opens its conference slate Sunday, March 6 against No. 3 Syracuse. Opening draw is set for noon at the Carrier Dome.
