FORT MYERS, Fla. – Former Duke University women's golf standout Leona Maguire collected her first LPGA victory on Saturday at the LPGA Drive on Championship, held at the Crown Colony Golf & Country Club in Fort Myers, Fla.
Maguire is the first native of Ireland to win on the LPGA Tour and earned a paycheck of $225,000 to move her to $1,306,409 earnings for her short career.
"Hasn't really sunk in yet. It's a bit surreal," said Maguire. "It's been a long time coming and I suppose you don't know it's going to happen until it actually does. Tried to just stay really patient today. Didn't get ahead of myself. Wanted to go out and just shoot a number. Didn't want anybody to have to hand it to me. I wanted to go out and win it myself and earn it. Yeah, just really proud of the way I played today."
With rounds of 66, 65 and 67, Maguire finished the 54 holes of action with an 18-under, 198, to win by three strokes over Lexi Thompson (201). Fellow Duke graduate Celine Boutier collected her third straight top-20 finish to open the season with rounds of 70, 67 and 70 for a 9-under, 207.
Heading into the final round, Maguire was tied with Marina Alex at 13-under-par, but the former Duke star carded seven birdies Saturday and hit all but three greens in regulation to finish with a five-under-par, 67. She hit 12-of-14 fairways and rolled 28 putts over the final 18 holes.
"I couldn't be happier for Leona," said Duke head coach
Dan Brooks. "Her first win was only a matter of time - because Leona wouldn't allow it to be any other way. She leaves no stone unturned, she's always grasped how good you have to be to make it, and she's an extremely hard worker. Leona deserves this win and I'm extremely happy for her."
Saturday's win was Maguire's third professional title. In 2019, she was a two-time winner on the Epson Tour at the Windsor Golf Classic and the Symetra Classic.
She becomes the third Blue Devil golfer to win on the LPGA Tour, joining Brittany Lang and Celine Boutier. Lang won both the 2016 U.S. Women's Open and the 2012 Manulife Financial LPGA Classic, while Boutier won the 2021 ShopRite LPGA Classic and the 2019 ISPS Handa Vic Open.
