Duke Closes Out ACC Championship Sunday

DURHAM - The Duke fencing team closed out the 2022 ACC Fencing Championship Sunday with the team event. The sixth-ranked men finished in third while the 12th-ranked women placed second at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The men started off the day with a victory over North Carolina (17-10) in the morning before falling to Boston College by a narrow 14-13 margin. The Blue Devils then fell to Notre Dame (17-10) to close out the session.Â
Junior Bowen Wang (epee) led the entire men's squad with seven victories, followed by Stephen Kim (saber) and Allen Marakov (epee) tallied six wins.Â
In the afternoon session, the Blue Devil women took the strips next and secured two victories as the No. 2 seed. Duke defeated Boston College (23-4) as the women's foil squad tallied a flawless 9-0 record. The Blue Devils went on to secure a 19-8 win over North Carolina, before falling to top-ranked Notre Dame (18-9) in the final match of the day.Â
The women's squad was led by senior Alex Gorman (saber) with a 7-1 overall record and Chloe Beittel (epee) went 7-2. Zsofia Walter (saber) and foilists Christina Ferrari and Catherine Flanagan each recorded six wins.Â
Next up, qualifying Blue Devils will have some time before the 2022 NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Saturday, March 12.Â
