DURHAM – Sophomore
Jala Wright recorded the third no-hitter in program history, as the No. 13 Duke softball program (10-2, 0-0 ACC) shut out Army 8-0 on the opening day of the Duke Invitational at Duke Softball Stadium.
"I'm feeling great," said Wright. "All thanks go to my teammates and Coach Young. She pulled me aside earlier just telling me 'J, throw your game and that's what I did.'"
The Blue Devils defeated the Black Knights (1-5, 0-0 Patriot League) in the lone game of the day of the Duke Invitational. The Michigan vs. Army game, which was slated to take place after the opener has been postponed following travel issues with the Wolverines.
Both Wright and Army pitcher Jolie Duong traded scoreless frames for the first three innings, with Wright picking up three straight swinging strikeouts in the third, before the Blue Devils found their rhythm in the fourth inning.
Following a walk and some opportunistic base running from
Kamryn Jackson,
Rachel Crabtree was able to drive her in from third base on an RBI single up the middle for a 1-0 lead. After a
Deja Davis hit,
Ana Gold and
Kelly Torres each drove in a runner off back-to-back RBI doubles and singles to extend the lead to 4-0.
Wright continued to strike out Black Knights batters, adding two more to finish with seven on the day. The Blue Devils secured the result for Wright by adding four runs in the fifth inning to win by run rule. A double by Jackson started a streak of three straight hits, with Crabtree driving in two runs on an RBI single to make it 6-0. The win was secured by an RBI sacrifice fly by Gold and a bases-loaded walk from
Francesca Frelick to make it 8-0.
Wright's no-hitter is only the second solo no-hitter in program history, joining
Shelby Walters' win over NC Central on Mar. 4, 2021. The other no-hitter came on a combined effort from Walters and
Claire Davidson against NC State May 7, 2021.
The Blue Devils are back in action against Army Friday at 1 p.m., before hosting No. 19 Michigan at 7 p.m., as part of day two at the Duke Invitational. Both games will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
