DURHAM -- As the Blue Devils prepare to open the 2022 spring season this weekend, let's get to know junior
Erica Shepherd. A product of Greenwood, Ind., Shepherd attended Center Grove High School before arriving in Durham. She is a 2021 WGCA Second Team All-American, All-ACC selection and is a current ANNIKA Award candidate for National Player of the Year. On the academic side, Shepherd is a two-time WGCA Scholar All-American, All-ACC Academic Team and ACC Honor Roll selection.
GoDuke.com: If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Erica Shepherd: Breakfast quesadillas
GD: Who's your favorite golfer and why?
ES: Tiger Woods because of how much he's done for golf and how fun he is to watch
GD: What's one word that your teammates would use to describe you?
ES: Trixie --- the name of my dog that we have turned into an adjective to describe me
GD: What was the last thing you read?
ES: Can't Hurt Me by David Goggins
GD: What's the last show you binge-watched?
ES: How to Get Away with Murder
GD: What's your favorite ice cream topping?
ES: Rainbow Sprinkles
GD: Are you into podcasts or do you listen to music?
ES: Both; I listen to lo-fi beats when doing homework and country the rest of the time. I listen to podcasts mainly when traveling
GD: What's your favorite way to unwind?
ES: I don't spend much time unwinding. I just go straight to sleep
GD: Which is your favorite meal: breakfast, lunch, or dinner?
ES: Dinner
GD: Are you a beach or mountain person?
ES: Beach
GD: What phone app do you use the most?
ES: Maps because I'm really bad at directions so every time I'm driving I have Maps open
GD: Is there any product you couldn't live without?
ES: My putting arc mat
GD: What your favorite movie genre? (horror, action, comedy, etc.)?
ES: Political thriller
GD: What's your favorite Disney character?
ES: Sleeping beauty
GD: What's your all-time favorite Halloween costume?
ES: Sleeping beauty – because that's my favorite princess
GD: What website do you visit most often?
ES: Happy and Hale mobile ordering site
GD: What do you wish you knew more about?
ES: Biomechanics
GD: What's your favorite place to eat in Durham?
ES: Happy + Hale
GD: How different was your life one year ago?
ES: Very different – I was living in the Washington Duke hotel a year ago so that in itself is very different. Also, I was taking all online classes so my daily life was a lot more boring, I get to move around a lot more now and see/interact with a lot more people :)
GD: What's the farthest you've been from home?
ES: Paris
GD: What is your ideal way to spend a weekend?
ES: Realistically: Spend Friday night with the team hanging out after playing golf. Saturday I get my laundry done, workout and clean my apartment then I hang out with my friends at night. Sunday I get ahead on my work for the week after playing a little nine holes with the team then I have a self care night which includes a hot bath. Unrealistically but ideally: spend the whole weekend on the beach
GD: What's your most used emoji?
ES: ??
GD: What's one thing on your bucket list?
ES: Hiking the Inca Trail and seeing Machu Picchu
GD: The best class you've taken at Duke and why?
ES: Either the Markets and Management class I took with Prof. Grody freshman year or Exercise Physiology because it was super cool to learn about how to make my training more effective.
GD: What is your favorite spot on campus?
ES: Duke Gardens by the water
GD: What's the best advice you've ever received?
ES: My parents always tell me to be grateful and thankful in all circumstances
GD: Who has had the largest impact on your life and why?
ES: 1) My parents because they have instilled so many life lessons in me that have made me the golfer I am but more importantly the person I am outside of golf. They always taught me to prioritize balance in my life and to never find my identity in golf which I am beyond grateful for; 2) Leigh Anne Hardin Creavy because she is why I had the dream of playing golf at Duke! I can't imagine what my life would look like if I didn't have her to look up to.
GD: What sport would you play if you didn't play golf?
ES: Basketball
