TEMPE, Ariz. – The Duke softball program (4-1, 0-0 ACC) closed its stint at the Kajikawa Classic with a 5-1 victory over Utah (1-3, 0-0 PAC-12) on Sunday morning at Alberta Farrington Stadium.
The Blue Devils improved to 3-0 all-time against the Utes, after two wins this weekend. Duke finished the weekend with a 4-1 record, averaging 8.4 runs per game.
Utah was able to jump out in front in the first inning, behind an RBI single from Julia Jimenez following an error to make it 1-0. However, the Blue Devils starter
Claire Davidson limited the damage, leaving two runners on.
After being held scoreless for three innings, the Blue Devils were able to manufacture a run to tie the game.
Jameson Kavel laced a double to left center field on a 2-2 count and advanced to third on an opportunistic passed ball. Entering with eight RBI in three games,
Kristina Foreman added another to her huge weekend with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-1.
The Blue Devils were finally able to break through for the lead in the sixth inning.
Kamryn Jackson drew a two-out walk, and Davidson drove her in on a double to the right field wall to make it 2-1.
Added insurance runs came in the seventh inning, beginning with an RBI double from
Kelly Torres to make it 3-1. Kavel continued her big day and sealed the win, launching a two-run run home run to put the game out of reach.
Throughout the late inning stretch,
Shelby Walters took over the game in the circle. Walters threw 5.1 innings of hitless relief, walking just one batter and striking out five to improve to 2-1 on the young season.
The Blue Devils are back in action next weekend, traveling to Gainesville, Fla., for the T-Mobile Tournament, hosted by the University of Florida. Duke will open the weekend on Friday, Feb. 18, facing Villanova at 3:30 p.m., and No. 6 Florida at 6 p.m. EST.
