DURHAM – The eighth-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team kicked off the 2022 season with a dominant 22-3 victory over Gardner-Webb on Friday evening in Koskinen Stadium.

Kerstin Kimel said. "This was a great night for us and I'm really proud of how our girls played."
The Blue Devils, led by graduate student
Catriona Barry and sophomore
Katie DeSimone with seven points each, netted 22 goals from 11 different scorers.
Barry tied her career high in goals (4) and assists (3) while DeSimone's six goals are a career high.
Duke scored fast and furiously, jumping out to a 10-0 early lead at the end of the first quarter as Barry and DeSimone had a hand in eight of those scores.

Abby Landry and
Veronica Hineman all added goals in the first 15 minutes. Hineman made her first appearance since 2020 after sitting out last season due to injury.
Gardner-Webb connected on its first goal of the contest at 8:57 and then again just before halftime to send Duke into halftime with a commanding 12-2 lead.
DeSimone added two more goals and an assist in the third quarter to extend the lead (17-2). Rookie

Katie Cronin for a nice goal right in front of the cage at 10:31 in the fourth before Cronin's unassisted goal at 6:04.

Sophia LeRose got the start between the pipes this evening before rookie
Kennedy Everson contributed two quarters of action and added four saves in her first game as a Blue Devil.
Shaye Fitzpatrick also saw action and recorded a save for the Blue Devils.

Maddie Jenner recorded 12 draw controls while midfielder
Abby Landry collected two caused turnovers. Junior defender
Kay Conway picked up two ground balls, while 12 different Blue Devils registered a ground ball.
The Blue Devils assisted on over half their goals with
Olivia Carner and Barry leading the way with three each, followed by
Caroline DeBellis with two and DeSimone,
Mattie Shearer and
Lexi Schmalz all with one.
Duke outshot Gardner-Webb by a whopping 42-13 and were nearly perfect on clears, going 15-of-16.
Gardner-Webb was led by Lauren Deaver, Brittany Sherrod and Jada Preston with one goal each.
Duke travels to Elon, N.C., to take on the Phoenix Sunday at 1 p.m.
