DURHAM – The No. 8 Duke women's lacrosse team opens the 2022 slate Friday against Gardner-Webb. Opening draw is set for 6 p.m., in Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils will then make the short trip to Elon, N.C., to take on the Phoenix Sunday at 1 p.m.
OPENING DRAW
Friday marks just the second meeting between the Blue Devils and the Runnin' Bulldogs. Duke captured a 22-7 victory on February 7, 2020, which also marked head coach
Kerstin Kimel's 300th-career victory. The Blue Devils own a 5-1 lead in the all-time series against Elon and have won three straight. Duke finished the 2021 season 11-8 (4-6 ACC) and made its 20th appearance at the NCAA Tournament where it advanced to the quarterfinal.

Caroline DeBellis all tallied 30+ points a season ago and combined for 175 points on the offensive front.
2022 USA Lacrosse Magazine and

Maddie Jenner also returns in the draw circle. Last year, she tallied 187 draw controls to lead the ACC with 9.84/game and ranked third in the nation. She needs 142 to set the Duke draw control record.
SCOUTING THE RUNNIN' BULLDOGS
Friday marks just the second meeting between the Blue Devils and the Runnin' Bulldogs. Duke captured a 22-7 victory on February 7, 2020, which also marked head coach
Kerstin Kimel's 300th-career victory.
Gardner-Webb finished the 2021 campaign 4-10 overall and 1-5 in the Big South. Heather Lobas was selected to the 2022 Preseason All-Big South Team as an at-large selection. Lobas was named to the second team after starting all 14 games with the Runnin' Bulldogs. She caused 23 turnovers and had 17 groundballs during the 2021 season. Talen Francis, the team's 2021 leading scorer, returns as an attacker. She notched 35 goals and eight assists for 43 points to pace the Runnin' Bulldogs offensively. Goalkeeper Kathleen Mackey is back between the pipes. Her rookie campaign saw over 700 minutes in the cage for a 13.39 GAA.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE PHOENIX
Duke and Elon square off for the seventh time in program history as the Blue Devils hold a 5-1 advantage in the all-time series. Elon head coach
Josh Hexter was an assistant coach under
Kerstin Kimel and helped lead the Blue Devils to a 119-42 record during his tenure (2005-12). During that span, Duke won three ACC regular season championships, one ACC tournament title and reached the NCAA semifinals five times. The Phoenix posted a 9-3 (3-1 CAA) record during the 2021 season that included a 6-5 victory over No. 12 James Madison.
Elon was picked to finish fifth in the CAA and boasts two on the Preseason All-Conference Team - Gillian Curran and Mikaela Buoscio.
THE DRAW CONTROL QUEEN
Senior
Maddie Jenner returns to the circle in 2022 as arguably the best in the sport at the draw. She was named a Preseason All-America honoree by
Inside Lacrosse and USA Lacrosse Magazine after having a highly successful junior campaign. In 2021, she was named a Tewaaraton nominee, a third-team IWLCA All-America selection and to the first-team All-ACC squad.
Jenner continued her dominance at the draw in 2021 and concluded her junior year with 187 draw controls, which tops the Duke all-time individual season chart. Jenner led the ACC with 9.84 draw controls/game and ranked third in the nation and tallied a season-high 15 three times, just one off her career high. Over the course of her career, she has amassed 371 total draws as the nation's NCAA active career leader in draw controls per game (8.24). She needs 142 draw controls to become Duke's all-time draw control leader, which is currently owned by her sister, Olivia.
In addition to her draw dominance, Jenner worked hard to contribute to the team beyond the circle. Last season, she gathered 25 goals and an assist for 26 points, which includes a career-high four goals in Duke's wins over William & Mary and Liberty. The 6-2 junior also grabbed 12 ground balls and caused two turnovers as she boasted a .543 shooting percentage last spring.
BARRY NAMED PRESEASON ALL-ACC
Graduate student
Catriona Barry garnered Preseason All-ACC recognition for the 2022 campaign.
Barry has been a constant in Duke's lineup the last four years as a midfielder/attacker and put up solid numbers last spring. In 19 games, Barry tallied a career-best 27 goals and nine assists for 36 points and joined the 100-career point club. During her senior season, she sported a .529 shooting percentage and picked up 36 draw controls to go along with 19 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers. She collected five hat tricks and had at least one goal in 15 of the 19 games, including a career-high four on two occasions.
DESO PRIMED FOR SOPHOMORE CAMPAIGN
Sophomore
Katie DeSimone had a standout rookie campaign and finding the freshman on attack was a point of emphasis for Duke's offense. She finished the year third on the team with 48 points (25G, 12A) and scored at least one goal in 12 of Duke's 18 games, including a career-high of four on two different occasions. She was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team for her efforts.
VETERAN SQUAD READY TO MAKE WAVES
Kimel's veteran squad has some unfinished business this season and is hungry for more than just a semifinal appearance. Duke's roster boasts 27 student-athletes who are either graduates, seniors or juniors and provide a wealth of experience to the underclassmen, both on and off the field.
Attack
Duke returns over 60 percent of its offense from a year ago, spearheaded by
Katie Cronin (40 pts.),
Katie DeSimone (37 pts.),
Catriona Barry (35 pts.),
Olivia Carner (32 pts.),
Caroline DeBellis (31 pts.),
Maddie Jenner (26 pts.) and
Abby Landry (24 pts.).
Defense
Duke's defense remains largely intact from last season despite losing 2021 Tewaaraton nominee
Callie Humphrey.
Katie Cosgrove (25GB, 15CT),
Natalie Kahn (17GB, 10CT),
Cubby Biscardi (32GB, 23CT) and
Kay Conway (20GB, 15CT) will anchor Duke's defensive unit.
Goalkeepers
Duke boasts five goalkeepers on its 2022 roster with room for friendly competition.
Sophia LeRose returns in the cage for Duke after posting an 11.05 GAA and .447 save percentage last season. Freshman
Kennedy Everson had a phenomenal fall and looks to be a key contributor between the pipes.
Chase Henriquez amassed over 250 minutes last season with an 11.61 GAA to provide more depth at the position.
UP NEXT
Duke will hit the road for two consecutive contests away from Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils will take on William & Mary Friday, Feb. 18 at 4 p.m., before a 1 p.m., contest against High Point on Feb. 20.
