Kyle Filipowski had his sixth double-double as Duke won its 40th all-time game at MSG, where it has won six straight games and seven of its last eight.
The Blue Devils (9-2) limited the the high-scoring Hawkeyes (6-2) to a season-low 62 points in improving to 4-0 when playing in the Jimmy V Classic.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A high-tempo first five minutes was highlighted by Jeremy Roach and Tyrese Proctor, who scored five points and four points respectively to help give Duke an 11-5 lead at the first media timeout.
- After Iowa tied the contest at 11 apiece, back-to-back three pointers by Jacob Grandison and Dariq Whitehead established a 17-11 advantage for the Blue Devils with 10:33 remaining in the first half.
- Duke made six consecutive shots to open up a 36-24 lead, its largest of the game up to that point, at the 3:48 mark.
- The Blue Devils took a 37-31 lead into halftime.
- Kyle Filipowski extended his streak of scoring double figures in every game this season with a three-pointer just under three minutes into the second half.
- Duke held Iowa's offense to a stretch of 1-of-9 from the field to secure a 61-45 lead at the under-8 media timeout.
- Roach reached 20 points for the second time this season, and third time in his career, with a layup to put Duke ahead, 67-52.
- Duke put the game on ice with clutch free throw shooting down the strech and Filipowski snagged a late offensive rebound for his sixth double-double.
GAME NOTES
- The game was Duke's fourth appearance in the Jimmy V Classic with a record of 4-0. The previous appearances were wins over Kentucky in 1998 and 2001 and over Florida in 2016.
- The game was the ninth in the series versus Iowa, with Duke now leading 8-1. The teams met for the first time since the 2001 season.
- The game was Duke's 58th all-time at Madison Square Garden, with the Blue Devils now 40-18 in those games. Duke has won six straight and seven of its last eight at MSG.
- As both a Duke player, assistant coach, and now head coach, Scheyer made his 25th appearance at MSG (20-5).
- Duke held Iowa to a season-low 62 points – its previous low of 66 came vs. TCU on Nov. 26.
- Iowa became the ninth Duke opponent in 11 games this season to score less than 70 on Duke.
- Duke out-rebounded Iowa, 45-35 – marking the ninth time in 11 games this season with a rebounding advantage and seventh time with a double-digit advantage.
- Duke held Iowa both below its scoring average entering the game (86.4) and its rebounding average (40.3).
- Filipowski recorded his sixth double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in 25 minutes.
- He leads all freshmen nationally with his six double-doubles.
- Filipowski has scored 10+ points in every game this season.
- Roach matched his career high with 22 points on 8-of-18 from the field, 3-of-6 from three and 3-of-3 at the free throw line. It is his second 20-point game this season (21 vs. Xavier) and third of his career. He also scored 22 at Virginia Tech as a freshman.
- Duke is now 7-0 in Roach's career when he hits three or more three-pointers in a game.
- Mitchell scored 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting and 5-of-5 at the free throw line with five rebounds. It was one shy of his career-high 18 vs. Jacksonville in the season opener.
- It marks Mitchell's second straight game with 15+ points after scoring 15 vs. Boston College on Saturday.
- Whitehead had career highs in points (eight) and rebounds (six) in a career-high 20 minutes.
- Proctor scored eight points with three assists and no turnovers.
- Over his last four games, Proctor has scored 45 points (11.3 avg). He scored 38 over his first seven this season (5.4).
- Young pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds – his second double-digit rebound game this season (career-high 15 vs. Oregon State) and the fifth of his career.
- Young blocked three of Duke's seven shots – a season high for him and matching the career-high three he had vs. Penn State on March 7, 2020, while playing at Northwestern.
