DURHAM – Duke University men's lacrosse head coach
John Danowski announced that
Kenny Brower,
Tyler Carpenter, Wilson Stephenson and
Dyson Williams will serve as captains for the 2023 campaign.
Brower and Stephenson both represented Duke as captains last season, while Carpenter and Williams were selected for the first time in their careers. The Blue Devils open the 2022 campaign Feb. 4 against Bellarmine in Durham.
Brower, a 2022 USILA All-America third team choice, is the anchor to Duke's close defense. He has started every game Duke has played the past three seasons and had his best campaign last season with 42 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers. Drawing the opponent's top attackman often over the previous two seasons, the Massapequa, N.Y., native was an All-ACC pick as a junior and ranked second at Duke among non-faceoff specialists in ground balls. He enters the 2023 season with 78 career ground balls and 32 caused turnovers. This past summer, Brower was the defensive MVP for the U.S. U-21 National Team at the Junior World Championship in Limerick, Ireland. He was instrumental in the U.S. capturing gold with a 12-10 victory over Canada.
A two-time USILA All-American, Carpenter has been a stalwart longstick midfielder during his career with the Blue Devils. A force on defense as well as on the faceoff wing, the Durham, N.C., native ranked second on the team and first among non-faceoff specialists last season with 67 ground balls. Carpenter also is a threat on offense in transition, netting three goals and dishing two assists in 2022. He picked up at least one ground ball in all 17 games last season en route to picking up his first All-ACC award. Playing in 42 career games, Carpenter has 162 ground balls and had 49 caused turnovers.
The lone graduate student captain among the quartet, Stephenson returns for his final season in 2023. As a senior in 2022, Stephenson played in 17 games with 16 starting assignments. He led the team and ranked sixth in the ACC in caused turnovers with 19. He corralled 40 ground balls, notching at least one in 15 contests. A respected leader, Stephenson has played in 45 career games and has 74 ground balls and 31 caused turnovers.
Williams, a senior attackman, is lethal around the crease for the Blue Devils. Leading the nation in shooting percentage last season at .551, Williams posted 43 goals and nine assists for 52 points to rank second on the team in scoring. His 2.53 goals per game average was fifth in the ACC as he became the 49th Blue Devil to reach 100 career points. Williams enters his senior season with 91 goals and 16 assists for 107 points. He is nine goals shy of becoming the 22nd Blue Devil to the 100 career goals. The native of Oshawa, Ontario also recently was among those selected to take part in the Canada Men's Lacrosse National Team training camp as it prepares to select the squad for the 2023 FIL World Championship this summer.
