DURHAM – Team Blankmeyer (Blue Team), led by coach
Ty Blankmeyer defeated Team Tyler (Black Team), 4-1 on Saturday to clinch the 2022 Fall World Series Championship, 2-1. Team Blankmeyer opened the weekend on Thursday with a 2-1 victory, before Team Tyler responded with an 8-7 victory on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME ONE (Thursday)
- Sophomore Alex Mooney hit a solo home run in the top of the first to give the Blue team a 1-0 advantage out of the gates.
- Graduate transfer Alex Gow started on the mound for the Blue team, working three innings of two hit baseball. Gow struck out five batters before handing the ball off to freshman Owen Proksch.
- In the bottom of the fourth inning, freshman Roman DiGiacomo drove in fellow freshman Vincent Fattore with a double to increase the Blue team's lead to 2-0.
- Proksch worked a seven-pitch shutdown inning in the bottom of the fourth inning. He finished the day with three innings of three-hit baseball.
- In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Black team strung together a trio of singles to cut into the Blue team's lead. Sophomore Devin Obee singled through the left side to score junior Jay Beshears for the Black team.
- Graduate transfer Charlie Beilenson struck out the side in the top of the seventh to keep the deficit at one run heading to the final half inning.
- Graduate transfer Cole Hebble led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and moved to second with a bloop single into right field by sophomore Menelik Israel.
- Both Hebble and Israel moved into scoring position by a wild pitch, but freshman Aidan Weaver shut the door in the bottom half to preserve the one-run victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME TWO (Friday)
- Freshman James Tallon earned the start in game two for Team Blankmeyer, leading the series 1-0 after their 2-1 win on Thursday. Tallon worked three innings of no-hit baseball, walking one batter and striking out five.
- Junior Adam Boucher navigated around a leadoff error, allowing Mooney to reach to begin the bottom of the first. Boucher retired the final three batters with a pair of groundouts and a popup in the infield to keep the game scoreless.
- In the second inning, Team Blankmeyer opened the scoring when DiGiacomo drove in graduate transfer MJ Metz for a 1-0 lead. Mooney singled up the middle later in the inning to extend the Blue team's lead to 2-0.
- After a runner advanced to third in the top of the third, freshman Gabriel Nard entered the game on the mound, stranding the runner and holding the score at 2-0 heading to the fourth.
- Graduate student Damon Lux began the top of the fourth with a single to right-center, before Chad Knight drew a seven-pitch walk. Obee drew a walk to load the bases and sophomore Andrew Yu cleared the bases with a double off the wall in left field to give Team Tyler its first lead of the series, 3-2.
- Sophomore Tyler Christmas leveled the score in the bottom of the fourth, hitting a sacrifice fly to right field. Team Tyler responded in the top of the fifth as DiGiacomo laced a doubled to right-center field to score Hebble from second.
- Team Tyler extended the lead to 8-3 in the top of the fifth, highlighted by three straight doubles and a pair of walks.
- Junior Alex Stone sparked the Blue team dugout in the bottom of the seventh, hitting a two-run home run to left field, cutting the Black team's lead to 8-5. Metz continued the hitting parade in the seventh, hitting a two-run home run to cut the lead to 8-7 in the bottom half.
- Sophomore Jimmy Romano entered on the mound in the bottom of the seventh, looking to close the door on the late rally and level the series. Romano picked up the save in relief, as Yu drove in five runs on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME THREE (Saturday)
- Stone opened the scoring for Team Blankmeyer in the first inning, swinging on the first pitch and doubling off the scoreboard to drive in sophomore Jonathan Santucci and take a 1-0 lead.
- With two outs in the first, Metz beat out an infield single and heads up baserunning by Stone allows Team Blankmeyer to increase the lead to 2-0.
- Graduate transfer Josh Solomon joined the action in the first, connecting with a two-out, two-strike single to center field, scoring Metz from second to push the lead to 3-0.
- In the second inning, Yu picked up where he left off on Friday, homering to left field over the Blue Monster to cut the Blue team's lead to 3-1.
- Freshman Edward Hart worked a shutdown 1-2-3 inning for Team Tyler, working three innings of three-hit baseball. He struck out two batters and walked one on the day.
- In the fifth inning, Santucci hit a solo home run to extend Team Blankmeyer's lead to 4-1.
- Weaver entered on the mound in the fifth for Team Blankmeyer and picked up his second save of the Fall World Series, clinching the victory for Team Blankmeyer.
