No. 7 Duke returns home Friday night for the second of three consecutive games against reigning conference champions as Delaware visits Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The game tips at 7 p.m. ET on RSN, with Bob Rathbun and Mike Gminski on the call. On the radio, Chris Edwards and John Roth call the action on the Blue Devils Sports Network from Learfield.
The Blue Hens won the CAA Tournament last season, while Monday's foe, Bellarmine, claimed the ASUN. Duke is coming off a 69-64 loss to Kansas, which is a year removed from winning the Big XII and the National Championship in 2022.
The Blue Devils have ushered in the Jon Scheyer era with a priority on defense and rebounding. Through three games, Duke is ninth nationally in scoring defense, yielding just 50.3 points per game. Opponents are shooting .368 from the field and hitting at a .200 clip (13-of-65) from three-point range  -- the nation's ninth best three-point defense.
On the glass, Duke is eighth nationally in rebounding (47.3), sixth in rebounding margin (+18.3) and third in offensive rebounds (19.0). The Blue Devils are +39 in second-chance point scoring through three games.
Scheyer, a 2010 Duke graduate and four-year letterwinner for the Blue Devils who spent the previous nine years on the staff under Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski, is in his first season as the Blue Devils' head coach.
Freshman Kyle Filipowski is tied for the NCAA lead with three double-doubles. He is the first Duke freshman all-time with three consecutive double-doubles to open a career and is the nation's only freshman with multiple double-doubles (through Nov. 16 games).
Filipowski is ranked seventh nationally in rebounds (12.0) and leads all freshmen in the NCAA; while graduate Ryan Young is 24th nationally in offensive rebounds (4.0).
Junior captain Jeremy Roach, a preseason first-team All-ACC pick and a member of the watch list for the Cousy Award, returns after helping lead Duke to the Final Four, an ACC regular-season title and a 32-7 mark last season. Roach and Filipowski are tied for the team lead with 14.0 points.
In total, Duke has 11 newcomers on the roster -- seven freshmen -- all recruited and signed by Scheyer which comprise the nation's No. 1 recruiting class, and four graduate transfers.
About Delaware
Delaware is 1-1 to open the season, beating Wilmington (Del.), 78-54, and falling at Air Force, 75-71 last Friday on the road.
Preseason All-CAA pick Jameer Nelson Jr., leads the team in scoring through two games at 18.0 points, while fellow preseason All-CAA pick Jyáre Davis is averaging 17.5.
Delaware finished 22-13 last season, winning the CAA Tournament and advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014.
The preseason poll in the CAA picked the Blue Hens third this season.
Seventh-year head coach Martin Ingelsby was a standout point guard for Notre Dame from 1997-2001 and later served on the Fighting Irish staff for 13 seasons as director of basketball operations and assistant coach.
Both previous meetings between Duke and Delaware came at Cameron Indoor, with the Blue Devils winning 79-73 on Dec. 19, 1995 and 88-50 on Dec. 1, 2012.
Duke is 69-8 all-time against teams currently in the CAA, including 21-5 vs. Elon and 28-3 vs. William & Mary.
On This Date
Duke is 4-0 all-time when playing on November 18.
The Blue Devils last played on this date in 2014, an 81-71 win over Michigan State at the Champions Classic in Indianapolis.
Duke's other three wins came at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Board Work: Duke Ranks Top-10 in Rebounding, Rebound Margin and Offensive Rebounds
Duke has been among the nation's best rebounding teams through the season's first week, ranking eighth nationally in rebounding average (47.3), sixth in rebounding margin (+18.3) and third in offensive rebounding average (19.0).
The Blue Devils have out-rebounded each of their first three opponents by double-digit margins -- +19 (44-25) vs. Jacksonville (a team that was out-rebounded just twice last season and by no more than two in any game), +25 (52-27) vs. USC Upstate and +11 (46-35) vs. Kansas.
Since the start of the 2020-21 season, Duke is 34-5 when out-rebounding its opponent.
Offensive rebounding has been a significant strength, with Duke totaling 20+ on the offensive glass in consecutive games -- the Blue Devils haven't had more than 19 offensive boards in any game over each of the last two seasons.
Duke is +39 (58-19) in second-chance points scoring through three games and averaging 19.3 second-chance points.
Individually, freshman Kyle Filipowski is seventh nationally in rebounds (12.0) and leads all freshmen in the NCAA; graduate Ryan Young is 24th nationally in offensive rebounds (4.0).
Nearly Back to Full Strength
Duke practiced for much of the preseason without the services of its top-two ranked freshmen in Dereck Lively II and Dariq Whitehead.
Lively, the No. 1 ranked incoming freshman, made his debut against USC Upstate after missing the exhibition and first game with a calf injury sustained in practice. He hit both of his shots (two dunks) with two blocks and two rebounds in 14 minutes vs. Upstate. Against Kansas, Lively came off the bench and played 21 minutes with two more field (both dunks) with five boards and a block.
Whitehead, the No. 2 ranked incoming freshman, has yet to see action after undergoing surgery to repair a fracture in his right foot on Aug. 30.
Continuing his rehab process, Whitehead went through pregame warmups vs. Kansas but did not play.
Filipowski Tied for NCAA Lead in Double-Doubles
Freshman Kyle Filipowski became Duke's first freshman all-time to open a career with three consecutive double-doubles as he scored a career-high 17 points with a career-high 14 rebounds in 33 minutes vs. Kansas on Tuesday.
The Westtown, N.Y., native was one of just four Duke freshman all-time with a double-double in a season opener, and one of just two (Marvin Bagley III in 2017-18) with consecutive double-doubles to open a career.
Through Nov. 16's game, he is the only freshman nationally with multiple double-doubles. His three double-doubles are tied for the national lead with Zach Edey (Purdue), Zed Key (Ohio State) and Nate Laszewski (Notre Dame).
His 36 rebounds through three games are more than any Duke freshman through the first three games of a season, surpassing Mike Gminski's 33 in 1976-77 and Zion Williamson's 32 in 2018-19.
Named the ACC Rookie of the Week on Nov. 15, Filipowski is seventh nationally in rebounds (12.0) and leads all freshmen in the NCAA.
Duke's Three-Point Streak
Duke has connected on at least one three-pointer in 1,156 straight games, the second-longest streak nationally.
It has been more than 30 years since Duke was held without a three-point field goal -- Dec. 30, 1989, versus Hawai'i.
