DURHAM - Duke offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kevin Johns has been named one of 51 nominees for the prestigious Broyles Award, an honor presented annually to the top assistant coach in the nation.
Currently in his first season at Duke, Johns mentors a Blue Devil offense that currently ranks fifth in the ACC in scoring offense, averaging 33.7 points per game after ranking last in the conference and 102nd nationally in the category a season ago. In addition, the Blue Devils rank fifth in the ACC in total offense, averaging 419.40 yards per outing. Duke's 4,194 offensive yards on the year also rank fifth, while its 6.24 yards per play place it third in the league.
Duke is one of two teams in the ACC to be averaging 200.00-plus rushing and passing yards per game on the season. The Blue Devils have 2,038 rushing and 2,156 passing yards on the year and prior to this year, Duke had registered 2,000 rushing and passing yards in the same season just seven times in its history (2003, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2021). Duke also ranks first in the ACC in fewest sacks allowed (14) and fewest tackles for loss allowed per game (4.30).
"Coach Johns is the hardest working coach I've ever been around," Duke quarterback Riley Leonard said. "He's the first one in the facility and last one out every day. There's not one situation I've been put in on gameday that he hasn't taught me the answer to. He's taught me not only the mechanics of playing quarterback, but how to be one as well. There are so many intangibles that come with being a quarterback and he's walked me through every one of them. He's also taught me how to carry myself as a person and a leader."
Duke head coach Mike Elko was named a semifinalist for the Broyles Award in 2017 and 2021 as a defensive coordinator at Notre Dame and Texas A&M.
A 43-member selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters and a committee representing the FWAA will select 15 semifinalists, five finalists from the list of nominees, and an overall winner.
The Broyles Award honors the top assistant college football coach in America and was established in 1996 to honor legendary Arkansas head coach Frank Broyles. Coach Broyles had a track record of producing some of the most successful assistant coaches in college football history.
The Broyles Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses college football's most prestigious awards. The NCFAA's 25 awards have honored more than 800 recipients since 1935. Visit NCFAA.org for more information.
