DURHAM – No. 2 Duke extended its unbeaten streak to 10 games on Tuesday night, defeating the visiting Howard Bison by a score of 2-0 at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils (8-0-2, 3-0-1) were led by freshman
Wayne Frederick's first goal of his career and
Jai Bean scoring his second goal in as many games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Devils were tested early, with Howard nearly putting their first shot of the game past Duke's goalkeeper Eliot Hamill in the sixth minute. The graduate student reacted quickly and made the save to keep the Bison off the board.
- Duke's offense applied pressure shortly after with a flurry of shots within a 40 second window in the 12th and 13th minute. Shakur Mohammed, Ruben Mesalles and Jai Bean all had their shot attempts saved.
- The Blue Devils opened their ledger less than 15 minutes later with Wayne Frederick's first goal in a Duke uniform. The Cabin John, Md. native, tucked home a bouncing ball in the box following a corner kick in the 26th minute.
- Duke possessed the ball for 67% of the second half, taking six total shots and putting four on target.
- Bean scored his third goal of the season in the 64th minute, evading multiple defenders before sending a strong shot into the upper corner of the goal.
NOTES
- Duke continued its best start to a season under John Kerr without a loss, reaching double digits with their 10th straight game on Tuesday night.
- Eliot Hamill secured his sixth shutout of the season, matching his season-high for shutouts that he set during the 2021 campaign.
- Wayne Frederick started his third game of 2022 and played the full 90 minutes, a career-high for the freshman.
- The Blue Devils took a total of 16 shots and placed nine of them on goal.
- Jai Bean scored his third goal of the season to set a new season-high, surpassing the two goals he scored in 2021 as a freshman.
- Duke held Howard to zero corner kicks in the contest.
- Five players for Duke (Ruben Mesalles, Kamran Acito, Amir Daley, Hamill and Frederick) finished the contest with the full 90 minutes played, and two more (Peter Stroud and Shakur Mohammed) finished with 89 minutes on the pitch.
QUOTES
- "Coach Gyau had their Howard players ready to play this game tonight. They were really fired up, they were really disciplined, they did well in the counter-attack and they did well in possession. They were a lot more progressive than we anticipated and I'm very pleased that we got the win and got the shutout." – head coach John Kerr on Duke's efforts against Howard.
- "We had to make some adjustments with [Axel Gudbjornsson] going out and moving Amir [Daley] centrally. Wayne [Frederick] is good at right back. So, not terribly damaging to us, but it was solid at the end. Good to get the shutout result." – Kerr on Duke's defensive adjustments.
- "We can't be complacent; we just have to keep working hard. And keep working in practice and then hopefully we'll get the results we want." – Wayne Frederick on how Duke can continue to build on its momentum.
UP NEXT
- No. 2 Duke hits the road for their next match, a conference fixture against No. 21 Virginia on Friday evening. The Blue Devils' third ranked conference match of 2022 is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start, with streaming available on ACC Network Extra.
