DURHAM – Duke University Athletics recently received a major gift from former student-athletes
Annie Mulholland Patrick and
Lucas Patrick in partnership with donor
Pradeep Baliga.
The gift will be used to endow the Annie & Lucas Patrick–Mary E. Gambee Memorial Fund, which is a scholarship that was established in the name of Annie's late mother Mary and will be awarded annually to a current student-athlete.
Annie and Lucas are the youngest former student-athletes to create a scholarship endowment for Duke Athletics, while Pradeep becomes the first donor to team up with former Duke student-athletes to create this unique gift.
"Duke was, and continues to be, a special place for both Lucas and I," Annie said of why they decided to create the scholarship. "Our time on campus played a pivotal role in our development on and off the field and we would not be where we are today without it, which is why when this opportunity came up, we jumped at the chance to pay it forward for future Blue Devils."
"Giving to Duke Athletics has always been a priority for me," Pradeep said of him teaming up with the Patricks for this scholarship opportunity. "Ever since I was a student, I've seen former student-athletes go on to do great things, not just on the field. Creative ideas like Teamworks and Protect3d come from our former football players."
Lucas was a four-year letterwinner along the offensive line for the Blue Devils, earning All-ACC honors in 2015, before signing as an undrafted free agent with the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League. Annie was a four-year letterwinner for Duke's women's tennis program, compiling an overall singles record of 72-35 and a doubles mark of 100-39. Pradeep attended Duke from 2002-06 and was a member of the school's racquetball team, representing the Blue Devils at nationals his sophomore and junior year.
"We are so thankful for Pradeep's partnership," Lucas said. "It speaks volumes to his love and passion for Duke Athletics that he wanted to partner with us to give back in such a meaningful way."
"My mom was the guiding light in both my academic and athletic journey," Annie added. "She believed deeply in the power of both education and sports, so when we lost her in May, it felt only right to honor her through this scholarship fund. We hope that our scholarship fund can afford future Blue Devils the opportunity that we were given."
