TOLEDO, Ohio – The Duke University duo of Celine Boutier and Leona Maguire combined for six points over three days on their way to helping lead the Europe squad to a 15-13 victory over the United States at the Solheim Cup, which was contested at the Iverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Â
Both former Duke National Players of the Year selections won their singles matches on Sunday to help Europe retain the Solheim Cup on U.S. soil for the first time. Europe has now won four of the last six contests and now only trails the U.S., 10-7 in the overall standings. Â
Maguire, a 2018 Blue Devil graduate, was the undisputed Woman of the Match for the Solheim Cup earning 4.5 points, becoming the first rookie in history to collect 4.5 points. On Monday in singles play, Maguire defeated Jennifer Kupcho, 5&4, to score Europe's first singles point. Maguire was the only player in the event to compete in all five matches. Â
"Just wanted to put pressure on Jen from the get-go," said Maguire. "She's a phenomenal player. We've played many times before, and I knew I'd have to have my A game today, and luckily there was still some energy left in my legs and I was able to get it done."
Maguire is just the third golfer to earn more than four points in a single Solheim Cup, joining her fellow Europeans Caroline Hedwall (5-0-0 in 2013) and Carin Koch (4-0-1 in 2002).
A 2015 Duke graduate, Boutier posted a 5&4 victory over Mina Harigae. After making a birdie on No. 5 to take a 1UP lead, Boutier made the turn 3UP and never looked back. Boutier now owns a 5-1-1 all-time record in the Solheim Cup in two appearances, including a 2-0 mark in singles play. Â
Europe led by two points heading into singles play and needed only five points to retain the Cup. After Europe led early in several matches, the Americans tried to mount a comeback, but was eventually cut short. Â
It marked the seventh straight Solheim Cup that a Duke golfer has seen action for either the United States or Europe. Other Duke golfers who have competed in the Solheim Cup include Boutier (2019) and Brittany Lang (2017, 2015, 2013, 2011, 2009). Â
