VERONA, N.Y. – A pair of freshmen led the way for the Duke men's golf team on Sunday as the Blue Devils opened the 2021-22 season at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate at the Kaluhyat Golf Club in Verona, N.Y.
Duke finds itself in fourth place in the 15-team field through 36 holes, shooting a 1-under 575 as one of four teams in red figures. LSU paces the field at 22-under, followed by host Missouri (-11), Penn State (-2), Duke (-1) and Delaware (+11) to round out the top five.
Kelly Chinn made his Duke debut with a 1-over 73 in the first round and followed with a sizzling, 3-under 69 in the second to find himself at 2-under par through 36 and tied for 10th. His freshman classmate
Luke Sample is also 2-under par entering Monday's final round after rounds of 70 and 72 on Sunday.
A Great Falls, Va., native, Chinn closed strong in Sunday's opening round, playing his final 13 holes in 2-under par, which included birdies on the par-4 10th hole (his 13th of day) and the par-5 13th (his 16th). Chinn also began Sunday's second round on the 16th hole, and dotted his scorecard with five more birdies, opening the round at 4-under through his first seven holes.
"The first two rounds felt good today," said Chinn. "Although I didn't hit it as well as I would have liked, I worked my way around the golf course. It was definitely fun to be able to work with the coaches out there and process through shots. I'm excited to go out there again tomorrow and try to put up a good score."
Sample also turned up the heat over his closing stretch in Sunday's first round, playing his final 10 holes in 4-under par on his way to a 2-under 70. The freshman from New York, N.Y. posted an even-par 72 in the second round and is tied for 10th entering the final 18 holes.
Sophomore
Cameron Martinez-Piedra posted matching rounds of 1-over 73 and is tied for 21st at 2-over 146. His sophomore classmate
Jimmy Zheng rebounded from an 8-over 80 in the first round to shoot at 1-under 71 in the second and is tied for 39th at 7-over 151. Freshman
John Peters is tied for 47th at 8-over 152 after rounds of 74 and 78.
Playing individually, graduate student
Qi wen Wong bounced back from an opening-round 81 to fire a 1-under 71 in the second round and is also tied for 47th at 8-over. Sophomore
