WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Freshman Luke Sample carded a pair of rounds in the 60s as he and sophomore Ian Siebers paced the Duke men's golf team Monday on the opening day of the Old Town Club Collegiate at the Old Town Club in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Sample opened with a 3-under 67 in the first round and posted a 2-under 68 in the second to finish 5-under for the day and in a tie for eighth. Siebers followed his career-best 5-under 65 with a 70 and is also among the group tied at 5-under.
As a team, the Blue Devils sit in second place on the 14-team leaderboard at 20-under par 540, eight strokes back of Wake Forest. Southern Miss is 19-under, followed by Wake Forest's B-squad (-18) and Penn State (-16) to round out the tightly-packed top five.
Sample opened the tournament with a blistering 4-under 31 on his first nine holes, which included an eagle on the par-5 fourth and consecutive birdies before the turn. He signed for a 67 in round one, and birdied four more holes in the afternoon round for his 68.
Siebers birdied seven holes in Monday's opening round on his way to a career-low round of 5-under 65 and posted an even-par 70 in the afternoon.
The Duke duo sits four shots back of the lead held by three golfers at 9-under par with 18 holes to play on Tuesday.
Sophomore Jimmy Zheng, who went low in Monday's opening round, is one stroke back of Siebers and Sample at 4-under through 36 holes. Zheng posted a career-low 6-under 64 in the morning – a round that also featured an eagle on the par-5 fourth -- to go along with six more birdies. The sophomore then birdied his first two holes in the afternoon round before signing for a 2-over 72.
Also for the Blue Devils on Monday, senior Quinn Riley is tied for 29th at 1-under for the tournament after rounds of 72 and 67, while freshman Kelly Chinn is a stroke back and tied for 37th at even-par with rounds of 73 and 67.
Playing individually, sophomore Cameron Martinez-Piedra is tied for 48th at 1-over (68-73).
Tuesday's final round sees the Blues Devils paired with Wake Forest and Southern Miss and the three teams are off the first tee beginning at 8:55 a.m. Live scoring is available from Golf Stat.
