No. 2 Duke looks to rebound from its first loss of the season when it takes on Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Sunday, Sept. 26.
The match is set for 5 p.m. and will air on ACC Network with Steve Schlanger and Angela Hucles on the call.
After starting off 7-0-0 for the second time in program history and being one win away from tying the team record, the Blue Devils came up short in a 1-0 loss at No. 7 Virginia on Thursday night.
Duke moved up to No. 2 in this week's United Soccer Coaches national poll, marking the Blue Devils' highest ranking since 2017.
Graduate student Tess Boade was named the ACC Player of the Week after netting the game-winner in the 55th minute at North Carolina on Sept. 17. The Highlands Ranch, Colo., native now has three goals with two assists this season.
Junior goalkeeper Ruthie Jones earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors in recognition of her six-save shutout at UNC. Jones has recorded 24 saves this season (.857 save pct.), including 11 in the last two games.
Mackenzie Pluck opened her senior campaign with four goals in the first six matches, marking the most goals in a six-game stretch for the North Wales, Pa., native since September of 2019.
Duke's defensive corps features three center backs who have combined for 23 starts in 24 matches -- sophomore Emily Royson, graduate student Caitlin Cosme and sophomore Katie Groff.
Duke is 8-4-0 in its last 11 road games dating back to the start of the 2020-21 season and has outscored its opponents 21-10 in that stretch.
DUKE VS. VIRGINIA TECH
The Blue Devils and Hokies are set to square off for the 16th time since Virginia Tech joined the ACC in 2004.
Duke leads the all-time series 13-4-2, and has gone 4-0-1 in its last five matches against Virginia Tech.
The two sides have met twice in the postseason -- a 1-0 Duke win in the 2011 ACC Tournament and a 3-0 Hokie victory in the 2013 NCAA Quarterfinals that punched a ticket to the program's first College Cup.
Duke's last match against Virginia Tech was on Oct. 9, 2020, when the Blue Devils downed the Hokies 2-0 in the midst of a four-game winning streak.
Caitlin Cosme converted a penalty kick in the 66th minute to get Duke on the board, before Delaney Graham buried her first goal of the season in the 84th minute. The Blue Devils held Virginia Tech to zero shots on goal.
SCOUTING THE HOKIES
Virginia Tech holds a 7-2-1 record through 10 matches this season including a 3-0-1 mark in its last four games.
The Hokies picked up a marquee win on Sept. 12, defeating then-No. 12 South Carolina 1-0, before battling to a 2-2 draw through 110 minutes of play at No. 4 North Carolina this past Thursday.
Virginia Tech opened ACC play with a 1-0 victory over NC State on Sept. 18 in Blacksburg.
Charles "Chugger" Adair is in his 11th season with the Hokies and has a 133-64-21 overall record with seven NCAA Tournament appearances.
Senior Emily Gray leads the team in all categories offensively. Her 18 points on the season are tied for third in the ACC, while her seven goals are tied for fifth.
Redshirt-junior Nicole Kozlova has six goals, including three in her last four games, to go with one assist for 13 points.
The Hokies boast nine players who have scored at least once this season.
Sophomore Alia Skinner has started all 10 matches in goal and has collected 29 saves. Her four shutouts on the season are tied for the ACC lead.
The Hokies have yielded three goals in their last four matches after allowing six goals over their previous four contests.
LAST TIME OUT: VIRGINIA 1, DUKE 0
The Blue Devils were dealt their first loss of the season on Thursday night, falling 1-0 at No. 7 Virginia.
After numerous offensive chances in the first half that included Mackenzie Pluck striking the crossbar on a long-range shot, the two teams went into halftime knotted at 0-0.
Virginia found its goal in the 57th minute off a set piece from the right side of the 18-yard box. Alexis Theoret served a high ball that Haley Hopkins headed to the back post, where Diana Ordoñez re-directed it past Ruthie Jones with her left foot.
Jones finished the night with five saves, including three in the opening 30 minutes.
Duke built up pressure in the final stages to try and get the equalizer, but each of the Blue Devils attempts were negated by the Cavaliers' defense and goalkeeper Laurel Ivory.
It marked the first time Duke was held scoreless since its NCAA Quarterfinal match against Florida State on May 9, 2021.
The Blue Devils were a victory away from tying the program record for most consecutive wins to start a season, set by the 2000 team (8-0-0).
The loss was Duke's first in regulation in its last 13 games dating back to a 3-2 result at No. 7 West Virginia on March 27, 2021.
Sophomore Nicky Chico made her first career start and logged a career-high 90 minutes.
DUKE ON THE ROAD
Despite its setback in Charlottesville, Duke enters Sunday's match at Virginia Tech having won six of its last eight road contests.
The Blue Devils are 8-4-0 in their last 11 road games dating back to the start of the 2020-21 season and have outscored their opponents 21-10 in that stretch.
The six road wins last season were Duke's most since the 2017 campaign.
The last time the Blue Devils opened ACC play with three consecutive road matches was the 2014 season, when they picked up wins at Pittsburgh and NC State before falling to No. 3 Virginia Tech, 2-0.
STORMING OUT OF HALFTIME
The Blue Devils have outscored their opponents 13-3 in the second half of games this season, with six of those goals coming in the first 10 minutes after the break.
Tess Boade's game-winner at North Carolina on Sept. 17 was scored at the 54:58 mark.
In the season opener against Arkansas, Duke scored each of its two penalty kick goals in the first six minutes out of halftime to build a 3-1 lead.
Duke's opening goals in the wins over Washington (Aug. 22) and Vanderbilt (Aug. 29) were each netted in the 53rd minute.
The Blue Devils have outshot opponents 80-28 in the second half.
