DURHAM – After the first weekend sweep of North Carolina soccer in Duke Athletics history, men's and women's soccer goalkeepers
Eliot Hamill and
Ruthie Jones have been named Duke's Co-PNC Achievers Student Athletes of the Week.
The Blue Devils' goalkeepers had a weekend for the books. With strong performances from both netminders, men's and women's soccer brought home shutout victories against the Tar Heels this weekend.
Jones led women's soccer against North Carolina on Friday night as the No. 4 Blue Devils won 1-0, defeating the No. 2 Tar Heels for the first time since 2015.
Jones set a season high with six saves and faced 15 shots overall, keeping the forceful Tar Heel offense at bay. The junior goalkeeper's prior season high was three saves in a win against Washington.
Hamill led the No. 12 Blue Devil men's defense as the team earned a 3-0 victory against No. 16 North Carolina on Sunday night.
The Scarsdale, N.Y., native recorded his fourth shutout in five games this season, including his second one in a row. The senior goalkeeper ended the night with six saves, for his highest total since his remarkable eight-save-game against Seattle earlier this fall. Sunday's win marked the first time the Blue Devils defeated the Tar Heels by multiple goals since a 4-0 victory on Nov. 12, 1999.
Next up for men's soccer is a road trip to Syracuse, N.Y., for a date with Syracuse on Saturday at 7 p.m.; while women's soccer will face another top-10 test on Thursday, Sept. 23, when it travels to No. 7 Virginia for a 7 p.m. matchup.
