DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University women's basketball head coach
Kara Lawson has added
Shayeann Day-Wilson ahead of the 2021-22 campaign. Â
A 5-6 point guard, Day-Wilson is the No. 41 recruit in the Class of 2021 and is considered Canada's top point guard. Â
"We're very excited to add Shy to our program," said Lawson. "She's coming off recent international experience playing for Canada in the FIBA U19 World Cup. Shy is a dynamic guard who brings a high-level of skill and athleticism to the position. She is somebody that is competitive and wants to win. It's a perfect fit for all of the players that we already have on our roster. She is a freshman that is going to come in and contribute to our team."
In August, Day-Wilson competed with her home country of Canada at the FIBA U19 Women's World Cup in Hungary. Day-Wilson and Canada finished fifth overall, while the Duke signee ranked second in scoring for the event with an 18.1 per game average. She also averaged 5.9 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.3 steals in seven contests. Â
A product of Toronto, Ont., Canada, Day-Wilson opened the tournament with 29 points against Japan and then collected 31 points versus the Czech Republic. She also added 22 points and 11 rebounds versus Russia. Day-Wilson's 5.7 assists a game ranked second overall and 5.9 rebounds ranked tied for 21st.Â
"I chose Duke because of Coach Kara," said Day-Wilson. "I felt like she could help me develop my game, take it to the next level and become that player I want to become. Also, she could help me not only grow as a player but as a person as well and that's extremely important to me. I'm really excited to play for Coach Kara as well as for the opportunity to represent Duke. It'll be a great experience and I'll learn a lot."
As a junior at Crestwood Prep, Day-Wilson averaged 17.3 points, 8.2 assists and 5.3 rebounds. She helped lead her squad to back-to-back Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA) High School Championships. She collected 18 points, eight assists and six rebounds in the championship game as a junior. Â
The guard is a Bio Steel All-Canadian selection, which is the Canadian version of McDonald's All-American, and a Second Team All-OSBA honoree. Day-Wilson earned the 2019 and 2020 Chris Smallings Classic MVP. She did not have a senior season due to COVID-19. Â
Day-Wilson will join a Duke roster that includes a total of nine newcomers for the 2021-22 season, including five Jordan Brand Classic selections, four McDonald's All-Americans, the 2019 ACC Freshman of the Year and four USA Basketball gold medals. Â
