DURHAM, N.C. – Coming off a runner-up finish at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate this week, the Duke women's golf team remained No. 2 in the latest Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Coaches Poll, which was announced Friday. Â
The Blue Devils received one first place vote and a total of 406 points to place second overall, while South Carolina was No. 1 with five first place votes and 421 points. Rounding out the top 10 teams were Oklahoma State (3), Wake Forest (4), Stanford (5), Arkansas (6), Baylor (7), Texas (8), Arizona (9) and Florida (10). Â
Duke turned in rounds of 285, 288 and 284 to finish with a 7-under, 857, which was just behind South Carolina at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate this week. The Blue Devils were the only school in the field to feature three golfers in the top 10 –
Erica Shepherd (4),
Gina Kim (T5) and
Anne Chen (T10). All five Duke golfers counted at least one round in the season-opening event with
Phoebe Brinker and
Rylie Heflin also competing. Â
As a team, Duke collected 49 birdies over the three days to rank second overall. Both Shepherd and Kim each registered 13 birdies to rank tied for fourth, individually. The field included 10 teams listed in the top-16 of the preseason Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) rankings.
The Blue Devils will next compete in the Windy City Collegiate Oct. 4-5 at Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, Ill.
