DURHAM – The Duke volleyball team (6-2) looks to bounce back from a pair of setbacks this weekend by hosting its final tournament, the Duke Classic, Sept. 17-18 in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Blue Devils welcome Cornell (3-3), Long Island (2-7) and NC Central (1-6) for six games all broadcast on ACCNX. This weekend marks the end of Duke's non-conference slate.
LAST TIME OUT
Duke suffered its first setbacks of the 2021 season over the weekend in Michigan. The Blue Devils fell in a five-set marathon to the Wolverines before dropping a 3-0 match against North Carolina in non-conference action. Senior setter
Alex Springate reached the 1,000-assist plateau while in Michigan as she dished 28 and 27 assists, respectively.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SERIES
CORNELL: The Blue Devils and Big Red have only met twice before in a series history that's tied 1-1. In their last meeting on September 10, 2005, the Blue Devils dropped a 3-1 match in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
LONG ISLAND: Duke and Long Island have never met before in program history.
NC CENTRAL: Duke owns a commanding 7-0 lead in the all-time series history but head coach
Jolene Nagel has only faced the Eagles once during her time in Durham. In their last meeting September 11, 2010, the Blue Devils captured a 3-0 sweep.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
CORNELL: Cornell is 3-3 heading into this weekend in Durham and most recently picked up a 3-0 sweep over Bucknell at the Cornell Invitational. The Big Red is led by Joanna Chang with 66 kills while setter Emma Worthington owns 228 assists for a 10.4 assists/set average as Cornell is hitting .202 this season.
LONG ISLAND: Long Island enters the weekend 2-7 overall and is hitting .169 percent compared to a .248 opponent clip. The Sharks went 1-2 last weekend at the Jacksonville Invitational, picking up a 3-2 win over Jacksonville.
NC CENTRAL: The Eagles are 1-6 this season under the direction of Jody Brown. NC Central won its season-opening match against Alabama State but have dropped the last five. The Eagles are led by Arlanda Faulker with 65 kills while setter Lauren Janok has 188 assists this season. The Eagles are hitting just .137 through seven games.
COLE RANKS AMONG THE BEST
Senior libero
Mackenzie Cole is ranked 31st on the NCAA active career leaders list with 1,356 career digs to date. She needs 17 more to move to 30th. She is also currently tabbed eighth on the Duke all-time charts. Cole has been one of Duke's top defensive specialists during her time in Durham and has 19 games with 20+ digs. Her career-high of 29 came against North Carolina on November 17, 2018. She also owns 96 service aces and will become the 18th player in Duke history to reach the milestone.
SPRINGATE REACHES 1,000 ASSISTS
Senior setter
Alex Springate reached the 1,000-assist plateau in Duke's setback to North Carolina on September 11. She now owns 1,001 career assists and ranks 15th on the Duke all-time charts.
MILESTONES TO WATCH
Three Blue Devils are approaching milestones in their careers:
Mackenzie Cole,
Ade Owokoniran and
Payton Schwantz. Cole has 96 career aces, Owokoniran has 871 kills to date and Schwantz checks in with 855 career digs as they look to reach their respective career marks.

Whitford Lot from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM. After 1:00 PM, accessible parking can be found in the
Blue Zone B-2 and B-4 Lots on Wannamaker Drive off of Duke University Road with accessible lift-equipped van service available to assist guests to Cameron Indoor Stadium. PARKING IS FREE OF CHARGE.
NEXT UP
Duke will open its conference schedule Friday, Sept. 24 against Boston College at 6:30 p.m., before a 1 p.m., contest against Syracuse Sunday. Both matches will be broadcast on ACCNX in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
