Blue Devils Reach Season High of No. 12 in United Soccer Coaches Poll

DURHAM – Following a win over No. 6 Virginia Tech on Saturday, the Duke men's soccer program has reached a season-high ranking of No. 12 in the nation, as the United Soccer Coaches released on Tuesday.

The Blue Devils scored a critical ACC-opening victory over the Hokies, defeating them 1-0 in Koskinen Stadium. The win was the first by the Blue Devils against a ranked opponent since beating No. 14 North Carolina on Sep. 27, 2019, and the first top-10 win since beating No. 9 Notre Dame on Oct. 12, 2018.

Sophomore Thorleifur Ulfarsson scored the only goal of the game, drawing a penalty kick in the 35th minute and burying it for the decisive goal. Senior Eliot Hamill recorded his third shutout in four games this season, making five saves to preserve the victory.

The rise in the rankings has been tied to remarkable defense from the Blue Devils, who have won all four games via a shutout and allowed just one goal this season. The Blue Devils have won four of their first five games via shutout for the 11th time in program history. Duke also leads the ACC in save percentage and ranks fourth in the nation at 0.947.

Duke is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 19 as they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to face North Carolina. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network and kick off at 7 p.m.
