DURHAM – Duke long snapper John Taylor was named to the 2021 Patrick Mannelly Award watch list, the organization announced Monday.
Â
Taylor was tabbed one of 10 semifinalists for the award in 2020.
A native of Snellville, Ga., Taylor has seen action in 35 career games and has played 204 snaps. The 6-2, 210-pound graduate student has been the primary short snapper for the Blue Devils the last four seasons and picked up long snapping duties in 2020.
Â
Last season, Taylor teamed up with redshirt sophomore punter Porter Wilson and kicker Charlie Ham, who were both named semifinalists for the Ray Guy and Lou Groza Awards, respectively. Wilson has booted 53 punts for 2,276 yards, averaging 42.94 yards per punt, while Ham has converted 13-of-15 field goals and 30-of-32 PAT attempts.

The award, named after former NFL long snapper and Duke football alumnus Patrick Mannelly, is given to the top senior FBS long snapper. Presented by Bernie's Book Bank, the Mannelly Award is in its third season of existence as Alabama's Thomas Fletcher took home last season's award.
Mannelly, who lettered four years for the Blue Devils from 1993-97, was widely known as being the best long snapper in the modern NFL era. During his time in Durham, Mannelly was a four-year starting long snapper, while also becoming a two-year starter on the offensive line. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the sixth round of the 1998 NFL Draft and became their career leader in games played at 245.
The Award, created in 2019, benefits Bernie's Book Bank, a non-profit organization located in Lake Bluff, Illinois. While last year's ceremony was remote, we are hoping for a live presentation of the Award in Lake Bluff on December 11, 2021.
Â
Ten semifinalists will be announced on November 15, 2021. Those names will be narrowed to three finalists selected on November 29, 2021, and the winner announced at the award ceremony in December.
