DURHAM – Duke continued fall camp Monday as it held its fifth practice at the Brooks Practice Facility.
Â
Co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jeff Faris and co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Ben Albert spoke with the media at the conclusion of practice.
Â
Faris highlighted his relationship with co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Re'quan Boyette and how the tandem will work together to run the Duke offense.
Â
"It [the co-coordinator format] works beautifully on defense, and it will be the same way on offense," Faris said. "I think the biggest thing with that is the relationship that Coach Boyette and I have. We played together. I knew Coach Boyette as an incoming freshman so to be able to grow up together as players and then now as coaches, it's been a lot of fun. He knows how I think and I know how he thinks."
Â
"He's been a huge contributor to the passing game long before he was our co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach," Faris added about Boyette. "I've leaned on him a lot in the past and we'll continue to do that. In addition, Coach [Zack] Roper has called a bunch of plays. Coach [Calvin] McGee also has been a tremendous addition from a schematic standpoint and a cultural standpoint. Coach [Greg] Frey, I think is as good as anybody out there coaching the offensive line. Yeah, I think that relationship is going to be a lot of fun. I'm really excited about it."
Â
During his time speaking with the media, Albert emphasized the importance of developing young talent as the defensive line lost multiple veterans from last year's team, including Chris Rumph II and Victor Dimukeje both being selected in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Â
"The biggest thing we have to do is to continue to develop pass rushers," Albert said. "In the past five years we have averaged about 30 sacks per season. That's one area that changed the game. Any time you can get a chance to hit the quarterback you disrupt or create havoc. Those are the types of things that we're looking for. He [Ben Frye] has that type of ability, I just have to get it out of him. It's on me. All these guys have all the potential in the world. It's my responsibility as their coach to put them in positions to make plays. I'm confident in my ability and their ability to get the job done when it is all said and done."
Â
Duke is set to kick off the 2021 season on Friday, September 3 at Charlotte. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Jerry Richardson Stadium.
