RYE, N.Y. – Paced by an impressive 4-under-par, 68, in round two of stroke play qualifying, Duke University women's golf junior
Erica Shepherd placed tied for fourth overall at the U.S. Women's Amateur and advanced to match play at the Westchester Country Club in Rye, N.Y.
A native of Greenwood, Ind., Shepherd registered eight birdies in round two as she moved up the leaderboard to finish at 2-under-par, 142, which was tied for fourth. Â
Shepherd started her round by draining a 9-foot birdie and would move to 3-under-par through five holes with birdies on No. 3 and No. 5. She dropped three shots over the next two holes, but rebounded by sinking a 6-foot birdie on the 475-yard, par 5 ninth hole to make the turn at 1-under, 35. Â
After a bogey on No. 10, Shepherd went on to play her final seven holes at 4-under-par. She collected birdies on No. 12, No. 14, No. 16 and rolled in a 5-footer on No. 18 to close the day. Shepherd, a WGCA All-America selection as a sophomore with the Blue Devils, hit 10 fairways, 15 greens and rolled 29 putts on the day. Â
Rachel Kuehn carded a 6-under, 138, to earn medalist accolades on the week. Â
Shepherd will open the round of 64 of match play at 10:20 a.m., Wednesday against Cara Heisterkamp. Â
Fans can watch the U.S. Women's Amateur starting Wednesday, Aug. 4 from 2-5 p.m., for the round of 64 matches live on Golf Channel. The tournament will also be aired on Aug. 5 from 2-5 p.m. (Peacock), Aug. 6 from 2-5 p.m. (Peacock), Aug. 7 from 2-5 p.m. (Golf Channel) and Aug. 8 from 2-5 p.m. (Golf Channel). Duke has three golfers who have won the U.S. Women's Amateur. Virada Nirapathpongporn won in 2003 at the Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, Pa., while Amanda Blumenherst won in 2008 at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore., and Hannah O'Sullivan won in 2015 at the Portland Golf Club in Portland, Ore.
Through two rounds of the 85th Pennsylvania Women's Amateur Championship at Sunnybrook Golf Club, Duke freshman Rylie Heflin is third overall with rounds of 73 and 76 over the first two days. She heads into the final day with a 3-over, 149. Â
