DURHAM, N.C. – As the Duke women's golf program prepares to open the 2021-22 campaign in a little over two weeks, the Blue Devils were tabbed No. 2 nationally in the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Preseason Coaches' Poll.
Head coach
Dan Brooks enters his 38th season with the Blue Devils and will feature a very experienced squad that includes three All-America selections – senior
Gina Kim, junior
Erica Shepherd and sophomore
Phoebe Brinker. Brooks returns a total of five letterwinners off his squad that advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Championship a year ago. Also returning for Duke includes junior
Megan Furtney and sophomore
Anne Chen, while welcoming in a pair of freshmen –
Sophia Bae and
Rylie Heflin.
The Blue Devils received a total of 489 points and two first place votes and was selected No. 2 overall behind Stanford in the WGCA poll. Wake Forest, LSU, Oklahoma State, Mississippi, Florida State, Arizona State, Texas and South Carolina round out the top 10 teams.
As a team, Duke features four golfers who have finished in the top-5 of a stroke play event, while both Kim and Shepherd have won a combined three tournaments over their career.
Kim, a product of Durham, N.C., is one of 20 ANNIKA Award preseason watch list candidates and owns two career collegiate wins at the 2021 ACC Championship and at the 2018 Landfall Tradition. Shepherd, a Second Team All-America out of Greenwood, Ind., turned in an impressive victory last year at the Gamecock Intercollegiate as she shot 7-under-par to win the event. Brinker, a native of Wilmington, Del., collected a 12-under-par stretch over two tournaments last year placing tied for third at the Gamecock Intercollegiate and the Valspar Augusta Invitational. An All-ACC selection from Sugar Land, Texas, Chen posted a season-best fourth place ledger at the ACC Championship.
The duo of Bae and Heflin combined to notch 23 top-5, 34 top-10 and 47 top-20 placements on the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) since 2016.
Duke will open the 2021 fall campaign Sept. 13-15 at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate, which will be played at the Royal Golf Club in Lake Elmo, Minn.
