DURHAM βΒ Β No. 15 Rutgers scored twice late in the third quarter to earn a 3-0 win over 12th-ranked Duke in the Blue Devils' field hockey season openerΒ Friday night. The Blue Devils return to action Sunday against RichmondΒ at 1 p.m.
The first two quarters featured just a combined eight shots between the two teams and only one penalty corner as much of the play came in the middle of the field. Duke had good possession at moments, but could not connect that final pass into the circle to create dangerous scoring chances.Β
The Blue Devils generated the first two shots of the game, testing Rutgers goalie Sophia Howard in her first career start. She denied
Kelsey Reznick from the left side of the cage, while a
Hannah Miller shot was blocked by a Scarlet Knight back.Β
Much like Duke, Rutgers did not see a lot of action inside the circle for much of the first half. With time ticking under a minute in the second quarter, the Scarlet Knights earned the first penalty corner of the night.
Rutgers' Lucy Bannatyne looked to redirect the sweep towards the cage, but was denied by a Duke defender. However, the official whistled the Blue Devils for a foul and awarded the Scarlet Knights a penalty stroke. Milena
Redlingshoefer stepped up to the spot and buried her shot low past Duke keeper
Piper Hampsch for the 1-0 lead at the break.
The Scarlet Knights tacked on two goals less than four minutes apart in the third period to extend the lead to three. The second came after a redirect from Kerrie Burns on a penalty corner. Bannatyne capped the scoring with a great backhanded shot into the side of the net for a 3-0 lead in the 45th minute.Β Β
Duke pressed in the final period, earning two penalty corners, but was unable to come away shots on cage in either of them. The Blue Devils finished the night with six shots and a pair of penalty corners.
Hampsch posted five saves for the Blue Devils in her 2021 opener, while Howard garnered her first win with two stops. The Scarlet Knights held an 11-6 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage on corners.
