DURHAM – Duke concluded its 12th practice of preseason camp Wednesday morning in Pascal Field House at the Brooks Practice Facility.
Â
Duke is nearing the end of preseason camp as it will soon shift its focus to its season opener at Charlotte on Friday, Sept. 3.Â
Â
Following practice, head coach David Cutcliffe addressed the media.
Â
"Huge week for us because at this point, this is it for camp," Cutcliffe said. "Everything is pointing toward a game. On Saturday, we're going to compete against each other. I like the spirit and attitude of this team. We just have a lot of little things to get accomplished."
Â
Entering his 14th season at the helm of the Duke program, Cutcliffe recounted his takeaways from Duke's first preseason scrimmage last Saturday and noted what he is looking forward to the next time his team goes head-to-head.
Â
"Yeah, I thought the good things were really done at a high level on both sides. There was a lot of give and take defensively that created some big plays with some tackles for losses. That's something that we really worked on, throwing people off schedule. Offensively, I thought we ran the ball effectively. I think we see that we have an opportunity to have a really good run game.
Â
"We learned a lot about not necessarily the depth chart just yet, but about who's in the mix and can make plays. That's what first scrimmages do. Now we should make an incredible amount of progress before Saturday. I was very pleased."
Â
Cutcliffe praised graduate student Gunnar Holmberg as he continues to progress into his increased role as the expected starting quarterback.
"Gunnar is coming along like I would expect him to," Cutcliffe said of the Wake Forest, N.C., native. "I think he's throwing the ball extremely well. I want 100 percent effectiveness on decision making. I want 100 percent ball security. I want him to buy in like we've never seen in that regard, and he's been working at it. He got a great spirit about him. He's got the ability. I told him I want to continue to work on his quickness in everything that he does. That's why we have camp. He's worked hard at trying to please and he is pleasing us with what he has been doing."
Â
Duke is set to kick off the 2021 season on Friday, September 3 at Charlotte. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Jerry Richardson Stadium.
