VERONA, Pa. -- Two current Duke men's golfer and three former Blue Devil are in action this week at the 121st United States Amateur Championship at Oakmont Country Club in Verona, Pa.
Rising sophomore
Ian Siebers and incoming freshman
Kelly Chinn join former Blue Devils
Evan Katz, Yarik Merkulov and
Erik Bertrand are five of the 312 competitors vying for the prestigious Havenmeyer Trophy over the next weeks in suburban Pittsburgh.
The test began with 36 holes of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday to whittle the 312 to 64 for match play. The field will be divided each day, with half playing Oakmont and half playing stroke play co-host Longue Vue Club. Six rounds of match play will commence on Wednesday at Oakmont, ending with Sunday's 36-hole final.
The Bellevue, Wash., native, Siebers led the Blue Devils with a stroke average of 71.07, which set the program's single-season freshman record. Siebers, an All-ACC selection in 2021, also led Duke this season in top-10 finishes (four), top-20 finishes (seven), rounds of par of better (19), rounds under par (16) and rounds in the 60s (nine). Of his 27 rounds played this season, 26Â counted towards Duke's cause (96%).
Chinn, 18, of Great Falls, Va., is looking to cap his stellar summer in the U.S. Amateur. He was the stroke play medalist at the U.S. Junior Amateur in July at Pinehurst, where he matched the championship 36-hole scoring record of 132 and joined World Golf Hall of Fame inductee Tiger Woods, Willie Wood and Jim Liu as a multiple medalist at the event.Â
Katz capped his senior campaign in 2021, leaving Duke with a career scoring average of 72.76, which ranks ninth on the Blue Devils' all-time list. He played 30 tournaments in his career, posting 11 top-10 finishes and 15 times in the top 20.
Merkulov concluded his Duke career in 2014 after four years as a Blue Devils. He played in 21 tournaments with a career scoring average of 74.00. Bertrand graduated in 1997 after a four-year career at Duke that saw him play in 25 tournaments with a scoring average of 76.1.
Oakmont has hosted more than its fair share of USGA championships, including nine United States Opens -- the most recent in 2016 won by Dustin Johnson. The course will play at 7,254 yards for the championship.
Television coverage of the 121st U.S. Amateur can be seen Wednesday, Thursday and Friday on NBC's streaming service Peacock, along with Golf Channel and NBC.
