DURHAM – Duke held its first fully-padded practice of the 2021 season Wednesday morning at the Brooks Practice Facility.
Â
After their sixth practice of the year, head coach David Cutcliffe addressed the media and praised graduate student Ben Frye as he transitions from tackle to end on a young Duke defensive line.
Â
"Ben has conditioned himself," Cutcliffe said. "I think defensive end is his first love. Now, he's just more in his natural mode. I think he's a good edge player. He's strong. He's fiercely competitive. He's got great balance. That's part of that wrestler in him, being able to play the zone reads and being able to manage the edge. You've got to have good feet, good balance, and he's gotten off to a good start. He's one I am anxious to watch in a live setting and see how he did today."
Â
Senior wide receiver Jake Bobo discussed embracing a leadership role on the team and the offense as well as the mentality that comes with it. Bobo has recorded 647 receiving yards on 52 receptions with two touchdowns in 32 career games.
Â
"I think any successful team has successful leadership and big-time leadership up front," Bobo said. "For me, that's figuring out what my role is in that. I've always been a 'lead by example' guy first, and that's going to have to change a little bit this year. It had to change a little bit last year too, being more vocal. That's something that I've got to work on and will continue to work on as we go through camp, just getting these guys ready to roll and have them push me the same way.
Â
"If I'm not busting my butt, I expect Trent (Davis), a freshman running back, to let me know, 'Bobo, pick it up, let's roll.' That's something that I think all leaders have to do, have an open mind in everything you do, but also push guys and be a little more vocal while you do it."
Â
Duke is set to kick off the 2021 season on Friday, September 3 at Charlotte. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Jerry Richardson Stadium.
