TOKYO – Former Duke star Quinn and the Canada Women's National Team advanced to the semifinals of the women's football tournament at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games with a penalty kick shootout victory over Brazil in the quarterfinal round on Friday.
Quinn was among Canada's starting 11 for the second consecutive match and third time in these Summer Games. The Toronto, Ontario native helped their side control play in the midfield, and in the 12th minute, Quinn found space after Ashley Lawrence had her shot blocked and fired one towards goal. Their shot was sent just over the bar, however, as scoreless play continued.
Neither side could break through for the entirety of regulation and two 15-minute periods of extra time. Quinn was subbed off in the 63rd minute, watching the rest of the way as Canada's hopes of medaling came down to penalty kicks. Christine Sinclair stepped up first for Canada in PK's, but her attempt was stopped, giving Brazil an early advantage. After each side converted their next three attempts, Canada goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe came up with two crucial saves to punch her team's ticket to the semifinals.
Quinn and Team Canada will square off with the U.S. Women's National Team in a marquee semifinal matchup on Monday, Aug. 2. Kickoff is set for 4 a.m. ET on USA Network and will also stream on fuboTV. The USWNT also advanced to the semifinals via a shootout victory, as they battled the Netherlands to a 2-2 draw before coming away with a 4-2 decision in PK's.
This marks the third consecutive Olympics that Canada has advanced to the semifinals of the women's football tournament. As the only nation in the world to medal at both the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Summer Games, Canada is looking to make history by getting back on the podium for a third straight time. Five years ago in Rio, Quinn helped Canada capture its second consecutive bronze medal.
