DURHAM – Duke swimming and diving head coach
Dan Colella announced the incoming freshman class for the 2021-22 season. With the announcement, GoDuke.com will be highlighting all 12 signees in the coming weeks.
Henry Batson joins the Blue Devils primarily as a breaststroke and individual medley specialist. The Greenwood Village, Co., native is tabbed the eighth-ranked recruit out of Colorado and graduated from Cherry Creek High School. He also competed for the Denver Hilltoppers on the club scene.
"I chose Duke because it offered me amazing academic opportunities" Batson said. "I was also excited to get to be a part of an awesome swim team and be coached by a supportive and helpful staff. I loved Durham and the beautiful Duke campus when I visited and cannot wait to start school and swimming in the fall!"
Batson enjoyed a successful prep career prior to Duke. He was a four-time USA Swimming All-American, three-time Winter Junior Nationals qualifier across seven events and a two-time NISCA All-American. In addition, Batson also qualified for the Summer Junior Nationals meet in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes as a senior.
On the high school scene, Batson's team was two-time Colorado 5A State Champions. He was an 'A' finalist in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley as a sophomore.
As a senior, Batson helped his team's 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay set the Colorado high school state records and were state champions. Batson also placed on the podium in both of his individual races, the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. He also broke the Cherry Creek high school record in the 100 breaststroke.
During his senior season, Batson was a member of the 200 medley relay (the breaststroke leg) that held the NISCA No. 1 ranking.
Batson also lettered for the Cherry Creek football team, serving as a team captain and quarterback during his freshman season.
Henry Daniel Batson was born on Oct. 18, 2002. He is the son of Maureen and Chris Batson. His mom, Maureen, was a women's swimmer at University of the Pacific 1987-90. He has one older sister, Georgia, who is currently a member of the UCLA swimming and diving program.
