DURHAM – Redshirt sophomore punter Porter Wilson has been named to the Ray Guy Award watch list, awarded to the top collegiate punter each year.
Â
Wilson was a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award in 2020.
Â
A native of Fairlawn, Ohio, Wilson concluded the 2020 season earning Second Team Freshman All-America nods from The Athletic in addition to Academic All-ACC honors.
Â
Wilson started all 11 games for Duke last season, totaling 53 punts for 2,276 yards (42.94). He ranked eighth in the league in punting average and had 21 kicks downed inside the opponent 20-yard line to just two touchbacks. He finished the season second all-time on Duke's freshman single-season chart in punting average.
Â
Also in 2020, Wilson recorded 12 punts of 50-plus yards to tie for the sixth-most in the conference. His 70-yard punt at Georgia Tech was a career-long and tied for the longest boot in the ACC for the season.
Â
He was named ACC Co-Specialist of the Week on December 5 after punting seven times for 312 yards (44.57) against Florida State with four punts of 50-plus yards and six pinned inside the 20-yard line.
The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thomson, Georgia native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Guy. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis placed on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
Â
Unlike other NFCAA awards, the Ray Guy Award utilizes online voting to select the winner each season. Ten Semifinalists will be announced on November 10 before online voting will narrow the candidates down to three finalists, announced on November 23. Online voting from 24-30 will select the winner of the 2021 Ray Guy Award and will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 9.
