DURHAM – The Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced Wednesday that redshirt sophomore kicker Charlie Ham was selected to the Lou Groza Place-Kicker Award watch list, presented by the Orange Bowl.
Â
Ham was a semifinalist for the award in 2020.
Â
A native of Atlanta, Ga., Ham concluded his first season as the primary place-kicker with Academic All-ACC honors after converting 13-of-15 field goal attempts (29-, 30-, 25-, 47-, 39-, 36-, 45-, 21-, 46-, 29-, 32-, 29- and 35-yards). The 47-yarder was a career long.
Â
Because of Ham's accuracy, he ranked tied for second in the ACC and 13th in the country with a .867 field goal percentage. His 13 made field goals finished tied for eighth in the league, along with his 1.18 field goals per game.
Â
Ham earned ACC Specialist of the Week honors on October 10 after converting three field goals (21-, 36-, and 45-yards) at Syracuse en route to a career-high 12 points.
The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
Â
Accomplishments are tabulated throughout the season and the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award will announce its 20 semifinalists on Thursday, November 4. From this list, a panel of more than 100 FBS head coaches, SIDs, media members, former Groza finalists, and current NFL kickers selects the top three finalists for the award, announced on Tuesday, November 23. That same group then selects the national winner, who will be announced on Thursday, December 9 during the Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.
Â
The 30th Annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, presented by the Orange Bowl Committee, recognizes the three finalists during a celebration in Palm Beach County, culminating with a gala awards banquet at West Palm Beach's Kravis Center for the Performing Arts on December 6.Â
