DURHAM – Duke men's soccer head coach
John Kerr announced an exciting slate of games on tap for the 2021 campaign. The Blue Devils will play 15 regular season contests, including hosting nine at the friendly confines of Koskinen Stadium.
Among Duke's 15 regular season opponents, five qualified for the 2020 NCAA Tournament, including semifinalists North Carolina and Pittsburgh. Overall, seven of the 15 foes played in at least one NCAA Tournament the past two seasons.
The Blue Devils will play eight ACC opponents and seven non-conference games, four of which come in the first two weeks of the season.
Season Kicks Off with Two in August
After four exhibition contests, the Blue Devils open the season with a pair of games the last weekend of August. Duke welcomes Liberty and Merrimack to Durham, Aug. 27 and 29, respectively. The Flames finished their 2021 spring campaign with a 7-3-2 record, which included a 1-0 win over North Carolina.
Merrimack played just five games in the spring, going 2-1-2. The Warriors are in their third season as a Division I program after reclassifying from Division II.
A Balanced September
September features six games overall, three at home and three on the road. The Blue Devils hit the road for the first time Sept. 2 at Michigan. The Wolverines went 6-4-1 while playing an all Big 10 schedule this past spring. They earned a berth in the 2019 NCAA Tournament, falling to No. 1 Wake Forest in the second round.
Duke returns home to host another 2019 NCAA Tournament team in Seattle University, Sept. 6. It will be the first meeting between the two programs.
The Blue Devils turn their focus to ACC play for the next three weeks, hosting Virginia Tech (Sept. 11) and traveling to North Carolina (Sept. 19) and Syracuse (Sept. 25). Duke has beaten the Hokies in three of the past four outings and has a two-game win streak versus the Orange.
The month closes with a home game versus Howard Sept. 28. It will be the first time the two schools have played since 1972, a 9-0 win in the NCAA Southern Regional Championship for the Bison.
Wrapping Up Regular Season in October
The Blue Devils open the month by hosting Louisville Oct. 1. The Cardinals struggled last season, going 5-8-1 overall. Duke welcomes familiar non-conference foe, Elon, to Koskinen Stadium Sept. 5. The Phoenix and Blue Devils are embroiled in a back-and-forth rivalry with Duke holding a 3-2 edge over the past five games.
Duke makes the trip north to Pittsburgh for a matchup with 2020 NCAA semifinalist Panthers Oct. 9 before returning home to host 2020 ACC Champion Clemson Oct. 15.
The non-conference portion of the schedule concludes Oct. 19 at Furman, which went 7-2-1 last season.
One final ACC road trip to Notre Dame awaits the Blue Devils three days later, Oct. 22. The Irish have won two straight as the Blue Devils look for their first win in Notre Dame.
A matchup with Virginia Oct. 29 closes out the regular season. Duke upended the Cavaliers in Charlottesville last season behind a hat trick from
Thorleifur Ulfarsson.
