DURHAM – Recent Duke University graduates
Meible Chi and
Peyton St. George are two of 535 female student-athletes nominated for the 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
Rooted in Title IX and directed by the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics, the NCAA Woman of the Year program celebrates the accomplishments of female college athletes across all three NCAA divisions. For 31 years, this program has honored the academic achievements, athletics excellence, community service and leadership of outstanding female college athletes.
Chi's nomination culminates a decorated tenure as a Blue Devil, earning the nomination for the second consecutive year. The Weston, Fla., native played her way into the Duke women's tennis history books, setting a school record with 43 wins in the ACC. One of just 16 Blue Devils named to all four All-ACC teams, Chi also competed in four NCAA Individual Championships with appearances in the singles tournament (2017-19) and doubles tournament this season.
A model student-athlete off the court, Chi became the 15th player in ACC history to be named to the All-ACC Academic Team four times. The redshirt senior was also the winner of the prestigious Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award in 2020 and was awarded the Charles Hargrave Hamilton Award (Team MVP) by her teammates this year.
Chi finished her Duke career with 232 combined singles and doubles wins and 136 singles victories, which both rank fourth on Duke's all-time list.
St. George's nomination comes after a strong senior campaign, breaking numerous records and helping the Blue Devils to their first ACC Championship title and NCAA postseason appearance. The honors for the Mechanicsville, Va., native poured in during the 2021 season, earning NFCA All-Region Third Team, ACC All-Tournament Team MVP, All-ACC First Team and All-ACC Academic Team honors while being named the ACC Pitcher of the Week three times.
During Duke's historic season, St. George compiled an 18-8 record with 13 complete games and held a 2.21 earned run average through 158.2 innings pitched. She set single-season program records for saves (5), innings pitched, complete games, shutouts (4), strikeouts (199) and strikeouts looking (35).
Over the course of her four years in a Blue Devil uniform, St. George has put together a 44-21 career record through 410.1 frames with 451 punchouts.
Next, conference offices will select their nominees for NCAA Woman of the Year. Conference nominations are forwarded to the NCAA Woman of the Year Selection Committee, which identifies the top 10 honorees in each of the three NCAA divisions. From those 30 honorees, the selection committee then determines the three finalists in each division for a total of nine finalists.
The Committee on Women's Athletics will select the 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year from the nine finalists. At an award ceremony Oct. 17 in Indianapolis, the Top 30 honorees will be celebrated, and the 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year will be named.
