DURHAM – Duke softball head coach
Marissa Young announced two additions to the program as
Michelle Sullivan and
Jala Wright transfer in for the 2021-22 academic year.
Sullivan, an outfielder from James Madison University, comes to Duke with one year of eligibility remaining. Wright, a pitcher from Michigan State, will have three years in a Blue Devil uniform.
"I was thrilled to hear Michelle was accepted into the Fuqua Business School master's program and would be bringing her WCWS experience to Durham," said Young. "She's a talented outfielder and an extremely bright young woman that understands what it takes to be a postseason team. I look forward to seeing how her maturity and experience contribute to the great team culture we have built."
During her four years at JMU, Sullivan started in 86 of 125 games played and compiled a .235 batting average. The Ashburn, Va., native started all 45 games in the Dukes' historic 2021 campaign which included a trip to the Women's College World Series. As a redshirt junior, Sullivan posted a .235 clip with 23 hits, including seven extra-base hits, with 17 runs batted in and 18 walks. Sullivan's season-best performance came at the College of Charleston, going 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.
Before the 2020 season was shortened, she held a .267 batting average through 19 games with half of her hits coming as extra-base knocks. Sullivan was a member of the 2019 squad that reached a Super Regional as she compiled a career-best .273 batting average. As a freshman in 2018, she made 21 starts in 31 games played.
"Having Jala in a Blue Devil uniform is a full circle moment," said Young. "I had the pleasure of recruiting her in high school and know that she's going to give us some depth in the circle. Jala is a dynamic athlete that can pitch, swing and run. We're excited to welcome a Charlotte native back home to North Carolina!"
Wright made 11 appearances in the circle as freshman, including four starts. The Charlotte, N.C., native pitched 25.0 frames and tallied 18 strikeouts, holding a 1-5 record in Big 10 action. She recorded a season-high four strikeouts in a three-inning appearance versus Maryland in which she held the Terrapins to four hits and one earned run.
Prior to her rookie campaign, Wright was ranked No. 53 by Flo Softball in the 2020 Extra Elite 100 rankings and ranked as high as No. 23 in the Class of 2020 Extra Inning Softball rankings.
