Carter, Durant, Holmberg to Represent Duke at ACC Kickoff

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Redshirt sophomore defensive tackle DeWayne Carter, senior running back Mataeo Durant and graduate student quarterback Gunnar Holmberg will represent Duke at the 2021 ACC Football Kickoff, July 21-22 at the Westin Charlotte located in Charlotte, N.C.Â

The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Monday the 42 football student-athletes who have been chosen by its 14 league schools to attend the main preseason event. Duke and the rest of the Coastal Division will hold its media availability at the kickoff on Wednesday, July 21.

Carter will vie for a starting defensive tackle position in 2021. In 14 career games, including one start, he has recorded 12 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss and one sack. Carter posted a career-high four tackles at Virginia in 2020 and got into the backfield for assisted sacks against Georgia Tech and Florida State. In addition, the Pickerington, Ohio, native holds one career reception for 11 yards on a fake punt at Georgia Tech.Â

Durant is charted as the starting running back for Duke after sharing snaps with former teammate Deon Jackson in 2020. Durant, a native of McCormick, S.C., boasts 1,321 yards on 234 carries with nine scores in 32 career games. In addition, the senior has caught 28 passes for 224 yards with two touchdowns. Last year, Durant led the Blue Devils in rushing yards (817) and rushing touchdowns (eight) and was second on the team in scoring (54 points via nine touchdowns). He recorded four games with 100-plus rushing yards, including a career-high 163 yards at Syracuse.

Holmberg enters the 2021 season as the projected starting quarterback for the Blue Devils. In seven career games, the graduate student has completed 18-of-25 pass attempts for 161 yards (.720) with two interceptions and has rushed 24 times for 28 yards (1.17) with one touchdown. A native of Wake Forest, N.C., Holmberg recorded a career-high seven passes for 71 yards against North Carolina in 2020.

Joining the three Blue Devils at the event will be head coach David Cutcliffe, who enters his 14th season at the helm of the Duke program.
