CHEVY CHASE, Md. — A pair of Duke women's golf incoming freshmen – Sophia Bae and Rylie Heflin – will see action in the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship this week from July 12-17 at the Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Md.
A field of 156 golfers will compete in the championship. Following 36 holes of stroke play July 12-13, the field will be cut to the top 64 golfers for match play. Five 18-hole rounds of match play will determine the finalists who will square off in a 36-hole championship match.
The Golf Channel/Peacock will broadcast the final two days of the U.S. Girls' Junior. On Friday, July 16, Peacock will have coverage of the semifinals from 3-5 p.m. Golf Channel will air the championship match on Saturday, July 17 from 1-3 p.m.
The winner of the 2021 U.S. Girls' Junior will receive the following -- exemption from qualifying for the 2022 U.S. Women's Open Championship at Pine Needles, a gold medal and custody of the Glenna Collett Vare Trophy for one year, exemption from qualifying for all U.S. Girls' Juniors prior to her 19th birthday, exemption from qualifying for the 2021 and 2022 U.S. Women's Amateur Championships and exemption into the 2022 Augusta National Women's Amateur.
Heflin will open things Monday at 8:34 a.m., and then at 2:04 p.m., on Tuesday, while Bae will tee off Monday at 9:06 a.m., and then at 2:36 p.m., in the second round of stroke play qualifying.
Three Duke golfers have won the U.S. Girls' Junior over the 71 years of the championship – Beth Bauer (1997), Leigh Anne Hardin (1998) and
Erica Shepherd (2017).
