DURHAM, N.C. – The Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) announced the four regional coaches of the year on Thursday, with Duke University head coach
Dan Brooks receiving the East Region accolades for the 11th time in school history. Â
Other honorees include Kory Henkes of Mississippi (South), Greg Robertson of Oklahoma State (Central) and Anne Walker of Stanford (West).
Brooks, who just completed his 37th season with the Blue Devils, helped guide a squad with four underclassmen to the 22nd ACC Championship in school history and an appearance in the semifinals of match play at the NCAA Championship. Â
In the spring, Duke's lone senior and a three-time All-American,
Jaravee Boonchant, missed the first two tournaments due to COVID-19 travel restrictions coming back from Thailand. With two freshmen, two sophomores and a junior, the Blue Devils went out and won the Gamecock Intercollegiate against a stellar field as sophomore
Erica Shepherd claimed her first individual title. Â
Over eight tournaments in 2021, Brooks and the Blue Devils finished no lower than third. Duke also won the Cavalier Match Play title, while finishing as the runner-up at the Valspar Augusta Invitational, Big Four Challenge and the NCAA Columbus Regional. Â
Behind
Gina Kim's 10-under-par ledger at the ACC Championship to claim individual medalist accolades, the Blue Devils went on to earn the No. 1 seed in match play and then defeated Virginia and Florida State to claim the team title – the 21st for Brooks over his 37 years at Duke. Brooks was also named ACC Coach of the Year for the 16th time. Â
At the NCAA Championship, Duke earned the No. 2 seed in match play after firing rounds of 292, 281, 293 and 289 over four days. The Blue Devils went on to knock off host Arizona State in match play, 3-1-1, before falling to Oklahoma State in the semifinals. It marked the fourth appearance in the semifinals of match play for Duke since 2015, which is tied for the most nationally. Â
Four different Blue Devils earned All-America honors on the season – Kim (First Team), Shepherd (Second Team), Boonchant (Second Team) and
Phoebe Brinker (Honorable Mention). Â
Duke closed the season ranked No. 1 in the final Golfweek poll for the seventh time under Brooks, which ranks as the tied for most by any school nationally. Â
Brooks has guided Duke to seven NCAA Championships since 1999, which is the most by any coach in Division I history. He has also collected 140 wins to lead all coaches. Â
