DURHAM – Former Duke letterman Michael Carter II was named Monday the recipient of the University Scholar-Athlete award by the National Football Foundation's Bill Dooley Chapter.

Carter II, a safety from Douglasville, Ga., wrapped up his Duke career having compiled 135 tackles, 7.5 Â tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, four interceptions, 24 pass breakups, one caused fumble and one fumble recovery in 46 career games. A 2020 third team All-ACC honoree and three-time Academic All-ACC selection, he graduated in December of 2020 after majoring in public policy with a certificate in markets and management. This past April, the New York Jets selected Carter II in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Throughout his Duke tenure, 2,581 career snaps, Carter II tallied two-plus tackles in 30 games, including a career-high nine stops against Alabama in 2019. He was one of three defensive players in Duke history to start multiple bowl game victories (2017 Quick Lane & 2018 Walk-On's Independence), joining defensive end Victor Dimukeje and linebacker Ben Humphreys. His 24 career pass breakups placed him tied with Quinton McCracken (1988-91) for 10th all-time in program history as well.

As a senior, Carter II was named a team captain and semifinalist for the prestigious William V. CampÂbell Trophy and Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award. In 11 starts, Carter II garnered 41 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, two interceptions and eight pass breakups. He finished tied for ninth in the ACC in passes defended with 10 and earned a season-best eight tackles against Charlotte.

Other 2021 University Scholar Athlete award recipients for the Bill Dooley Triangle East Chapter of North Carolina included Grant Gibson of NC State, Trevor Collins of North Carolina, Chuck Manning of NC Central and Jonn Young of East Carolina.
